For the fear of being too OP, in Ys VIII the level gap this time is generally much wider - when you are around 6x - 7x you can face enemies & bosses around 8x and much much higher, regardless them being optional or main. And if playing on Nightmare or Inferno difficulty, your level doesnt matter much as they pretty much wipe you in 1-2 whiffs as well. And even if you do feel OP, how about dynamically tuning it by handicap yourself (no one dies in party once, no healing, solo only by putting others into defensive).
In short, you don't have to match same level as bosses to fight them equally. Therefore your weapons, armors and accessories matter the most.
Finally, if you are unsure of sth, missing out sth => save often! devs give you 254 slots for a reason
