Low Magic Age Frequently Asked Questions

Character creation? Am I missing something or is character creation basically disabled right now, is it not possible to select feats and such?

There are two ways to create a character:

1. From Pre-build:
For a new player, it's difficult to create a character from scratch. Race, class, abilities, feats, spells, there are too many terms and knowledge need to learn and consider.

At this point, choosing a pre-build from the list and creating a complete character by just one-step is a better solution. A pre-build character chooses all the above attributes automatically, and learns new feats and spells automatically when levelling up, no need to control manually. A perfect choice for new players.

You only need to create characters step by step when you're familiar with the game or existing pre-builds can not meet your requirements.

2. Customizing Step by Step:
When existing pre-builds can not meet your requirements, you can create your ideal character step by step from choosing race and class.

When the adventure mode will be released?

Uh, hard to say, too many uncertainties... About 2d6 months, I think;)

About the adventure mode, can we expect a roguelike procedural world or is everything hand-crafted?

The whole adventure world will be hand-crafted. And most other adventure elements on the world are program generated, such as random dungeons, random side-quests.

Can anyone recommend some gameplay videos? I am don't care if its not in English, I am interested to see some gameplay.

You may browse the Low Magic Age game videos here:

Nothing happens after video resolution changed?

Please restart the game.

Can I choose the abilities and feats when levelling up?

Select "Custom" when creating a character and you are on your own. The "Premade" characters are designed for beginner players.

How much is the maximum level?

Currently, there is no upper limit for levelling up in Arena mode. Nor does the Arena level.

My skill bar is totally filled and I cannot see the new skills.

Right-click on the action bar to replace and add new actions.
Right-click on battlefield to select all available actions.

How can I check the action sequence and other info of the combatants?

Press the Alt key to see "Action sequence" and other infos.

Can I use customized portraits and other resources?

All the game resources are open and you can edit/replace them freely.
gfx folder: graphics
sfx folder: music and sound effects
text folder: texts. en for Engligh, cs for Chinese, etc.

> Weird chains of either 20s or 1s: I noticed a high amount of either 20s or 1s chained together - best was ten 20s in a row (which seems very unlikely if the randomizer is working as it should) This happens both for my party and the enemy - while it might be fun to see the enemy missing you all the time it gets annoying when the Dwarf Maulers stunlock you.

This is just how our world works ;) :redhydra:

About Hit Rate and Low Magic Age D20 Randomizer Test Data:

Are all spells 100% hit change? A spell displays a to-hit percentage when you cast it, but I have never seen it miss ever, even with the 5% hit change.

Spells have "missed damage". You can find clues in combat logs. It's the most remarkable difference between spells and weapon attacks.

That is to say, a spell with damage rolls deals half damage when missed. And there are special missed damage rolls for instant death spells, too, like "Slay Living".

How the Critical Hit Damage works?

The Critical Hit Damage basically follows the dnd 3r rule:

Only base weapon damage and modifiers (from strength, feats...) are multiplied, weapon enhancements no included. Damage dices from enhancements are never multiplied.

It's OP if enhancements are multiplied which may bring more accidental deaths ;):redhydra: In dnd 4e, no multiplying at all, only max the regular damage. It's better to avoid accidental deaths, but we prefer the 3r multiplying which is more breathtaking, especially when you're cosplaying the Death by wielding a scythe ;):redhydra:

3r Critical Hit Damage Rule:

Multiplying Damage: Sometimes you multiply damage by some factor, such as on a critical hit. Roll the damage (with all modifiers) multiple times and total the results. Note: When you multiply damage more than once, each multiplier works off the original, unmultiplied damage.

Exception: Extra damage dice over and above a weapon’s normal damage are never multiplied.

4e Critical Hit Damage Rule:

Maximum Damage: Rather than roll damage, determine the maximum damage you can roll with your attack. This is your critical damage. (Attacks that don’t deal damage still don’t deal damage on a critical hit.)

Extra Damage: Magic weapons and implements, as well as high crit weapons, can increase the damage you deal when you score a critical hit. If this extra damage is a die roll, it’s not automatically maximum damage; you add the result of the roll.

General feats like Improved Initiative, Great Fortitude and such seems weak as they are now. Considering that most of the stats come from level and attributes things like +4 to initiative can matter at low level but with mid to high they become almost irrelevant. Maybe they should scale a bit? Like +1 with each tier. That would make them relevant even in the late game

Various base damage dices (including weapons, spells, and bonuses from Weapon Specialization, etc.) increased each tier.

But attacks, all defense types are relatively stable, 1 point always means 5% hit, even at high levels.

What are backup weapons used for?

Backup weapons are used for the Swap Weapon action. So, in combat, you can switch to a backup weapon for different attack types (melee, ranged) or different damage types.

For example, a hammer with the Bludgeoning damage type can bypass the Damage Reduction of skeletons.

No need to reload a crossbow? It is imbalance that heavy crossbows are better than long bows in both range and damage.

Good suggestion. The point is that clicking for reload is annoying, and popping-out opportunity attack warnings are worse. Thus the reloading action is removed together with Rapid Reload feat.

There will be more feats to distinguish bows and crossbows in future version: bows are better for rapid shot and multiple targets, and crossbows for higher damage and piecing attack.

Why are slings two-hand weapons? They are traditional one-hand weapons.

Yes, they are one-hand weapons but require two-hands to reload. It is enough to have hand crossbows as the typical one-hand ranged weapons.

I have a +6 disruption throwing hammer with the Greater Defending (+4 Shield bonus) that will not apply this bonus.

1. Same type enchantments do not stack, take max only. So if you equipped a shield, the Greater Defending (+4 Shield bonus) is useless.

2. The Greater Defending (+4 Shield bonus) takes effect only when you hold the throwing hammer in hand as a melee weapon.

You can not defend with a throwing weapon in your ammo slot ;)

I have encountered a few enemies at high lvls (im Lvl 45) that only have 1 hp. Horde Ghouls being one example. There were some kind of slingers too that were only 1hp. All other stats, etc were scaled to their proper place, but not hp.

You can hover on the Minion tag on the right panel for details.

There are 4 ranks of monsters: Standard, Elite, Solo and Minion.

Standard
Standard monsters have standard strength.

Elite
Elite monsters are tougher than standard monsters of the same role and level.

An elite monster counts as two standard monsters of its level, worth twice as many XP and are twice as dangerous.

Elite monsters make great "mini-bosses", e.g. a group of ogres led by an elite ogre, or two elite gnoll huntermasters lead a pack of gnolls.

Solo
Solo monsters are single opponents against a group of PCs of the same level.

They function, in effect, as a group of monsters. They have more hit points and deal more damage.

A solo monster is worth the same amount of XP as five monsters of its level. It provides the same level of challenge as five monsters, but it has the ability to stand and fight on its own.

Minion
Minions are serve as shock troops and cannon fodder for other monsters (standard, elite, or solo).

A fight against thirty minions is a grand cinematic battle. The players get to enjoy carving through the mob like a knife through butter, feeling confident and powerful.

Four minions are considered to be about the same as a standard monster of their level, but a minion is destroyed when it takes any amount of damage.

My sole complaint thus far, actually, is the numerous boring boss fights with giant ants. Would like to see more variety in the boss fights.

The Giant Ant Queen is the lowest level (lv5) solo monster. So you may encounter it frequently at low levels. After level 10, you will encounter more solo monsters:

Lv5 Giant Ant Queen
Lv10 Hobgoblin Warlord
Lv15 Orog Chieftain
Lv15 Ogre King
Lv15 Troll Great Mistress
Lv15 Iron Golem Defender
Lv20 Drow Mistress
Lv30 Demilich

An enemy shot my character, but it said "Invalid target" for them. Why?

It's an expression of Field of View and Fog of War.

A shooter is allowed to make a ranged attack at a guessing location out of sight and the attack target will be logged as "Invalid target".

> How to cooldowns work in this game?

Actually, every creature has two internal energy pools for the CD mechanism, one for spells and spell-like abilities, and another for military arts (i.e. exploits of 4E).

Once you cast a spell, the energy will be reset to 0, and increase 1 point per round. If the energy >= CD of a spell, you can cast it now.

> Also, a "dash" option would be great, as well! (A way to move a second time as your action instead of attacking).

We temporarily discarded the double-move of dnd because too high or dynamic movement speed may dilute tactics of limited area battlefields.

We may enable it once we found a good solution to solve the issue.

p.s. Multi-times moving will be implemented first.

> I'll have the enemy flanked and my rogue within 3 squares of the fight but it still won't happen.

> Maybe if my allies are flanking, a ranged rogue should also get Sneak Attack?...

>In tabletop you could get sneak attack if the enemy was flanked (not necessarily by you), or blinded, or flat footed, or just caught unaware. Flanking doesn't work for ranged and there doesn't seem to be any way of inflicting blind/flat footed

We made the Sneak Attack in strict accordance with the original dnd 3r rule:
When you flank a target or the target lost his Dex bonus to AC...

So an enemy who flanked by your allies is not an eligible sneak attack target, including ranged sneak attacks.

An asleep or stunned foe is an eligible ranged sneak attack target.

> Is there any plans for map or scenario editing in the future?

Yes. We'll provide map, scenario, campaign editor and other MOD features in future updates.

> Are TRUE.achievements obtained by achieving the set amount of victories without ever losing an entire battle, or without ever having anyone 'die' during the battle?

TRUE.achievements need all victories without ever losing a battle (individual death allowed). You may check this information in the Arena by hovering on the Wave No.

Closing game in battle causes a defeat, just like Surrender.

Once suffered a defeat, you need to build a new party to obtain TRUE.achievements.

> I was enjoying this game for 50 plus hours and now it won’t load the arena anymore.

It seems that your save files were damaged by Steam Cloud or Low Magic Age itself, or just disk damage.

I think the worst case scenario is that your current playing party may be lost forever and you have to reset the arena to the original state with a lv1 default party.

Please follow me to do this:

1. Make sure Low Magic Age is not running.

2. All your save files and parties are in ...Steam\SteamApps\common\LowMagicAge\saves\arena folder. So please backup the folder first and send a copy to us, we’ll debug it and perhaps can restore your save and party.

3. Disable Steam Cloud for Low Magic Age in Steam Client by uncheck Low Magic Age –> Properties –> UPDATES –> Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for Low Magic Age. This step is necessary, otherwise Steam Cloud always overwrite your save files.

4. Delete the ...Steam\SteamApps\common\LowMagicAge\saves\arena folder.

5. Launch Low Magic Age and now you can enter arena with a lv1 default party.

Why no running, feinting, aiding others and so on? The game will be much more interesting!

Yes, it will be. Yet the main focus now is simple and straightforward combat. We're working on a complicated action series like the Combat Maneuvers system of Pathfinder, and other options have to be added gradually with careful measure.

More options are not always welcome when they require too much time to find the best solution. They may slow down the combat flow. In ADnD TRPG, such case happens even without so much options. Here is a REAL example:

The fighter: "Should I knock him down or push him away?"
The rogue: "No pushing, I need to flank."
The cleric: "That's risky. With one square shifting, we are all in his aura!"
The rogue: "You step back. I could make a swapping-position blow."
The wizard: "Or I can pull him closer."
The fighter: "No you can't. That's a solid corner."
The wizard: "I can move to here and pull. But the cleric should be off the line."
The cleric: "I step back and the rogue will be smashed."

Ten minutes later, they find the best move. The fighter rolls the dice with confidence. The result is MISS.

"Time to rethink..."

Is there any debug mode or cheat codes available?

Yes. You may enable the debug mode with a series of debug commands, including adding Gold, XP, and Glory Points, etc.

But these commands will seriously affect the normal game experience, only recommend to testers and players who have a strong self-control. Before deciding to enable it, please make sure you really need it.

To enable:
1. Exit the game, open ...Steam\SteamApps\common\LowMagicAge\config.ini
2. Add debug=1 to the end of the file and save it
3. Start the game and enter Arena, you will find the debug button on the bottom right.

I have steam installed on multiple computers so I can play where ever I am. Just recently I began to get an error that says Low Magic Age is running at another location (it is not, I had someone check for me). Selecting the option to run here and disconnect the other location just results in a message of: Completing Installation %. And this never advances or loads. Unintalling and reinstalling does not help. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure the exact reason. The following solutions may be helpful:

Restart Computer

It's always a good first step to make sure that you restart Steam as well as your computer.

Restarting the computer flushes all kinds of system states and caches, while resetting other programs and releasing locks on files and other resources.

Clear Download Cache

Clearing the Steam download cache will cause the Steam client to flush locally cached configuration data and acquire it from the Steam servers again.

Navigate to your Steam -> Settings -> Downloads -> Clear Download Cache

Repair Library Folder

The Steam library folder contains all of your installed games on disk. These folders need to be writable by all users in order to update properly. Sometimes these user permissions break and need to be refreshed.

Navigate to your Steam -> Settings -> Downloads -> Steam Library Folders -> Right click on folder -> Repair Folder

Verify Local Files

Sometimes files on hard-disks and other storage devices become corrupted because of bad hardware, software crashes, power surges etc. Steam can verify the correctness over installed game files and fix them if necessary.

Find Game in Library -> Right click -> Properties -> Local Files -> Verify Integrity of Game Files

Change Download Region

The Steam content system is divided into geographical regions. The Steam client automatically detects its current region and uses content servers located in that region for best performance. Sometimes, servers in a specific region may be slow, overloaded or have a hardware failure causing download issues. It is advisable to temporarily switch to a different download region to use another set of content servers.

Steam -> Settings -> Downloads -> Download Region. You may need to test several regions other than your own.

Reinstall Steam

The Steam installer can be downloaded here: (http://gtm.you1.cn/storesteam/about/) and reinstalled to the same location where it is already installed.

This may fix potential issues with Steam client and service files. Installing into same location will preserve all installed games.

WARNING! Uninstalling Steam will delete all game content.

Move Game Folder

It can be very helpful to test the issue by installing on an alternate hard drive. If one is already available, you can create a new Steam library folder on this drive. You can then install new games into this Steam library folder or move already installed games there.

Steam -> Settings -> Downloads -> Steam Library Folders -> Add new Library folder

Very nice FAQ, didn't know the alt key thing, great! :)
Honestly, in a single player environment, having longer turns due to pondering options isn't a bad thing. In fact, it's a clear sign of combat depth if there's no obviously best move. Should you want to keep options simple, just introduce weapons that have combat manuevers baked into them (whips for disarm, billhooks for grapple, mattocks for sunder etc.).

Alternately, you can have a complexity slider that works as a secondary difficulty option - on the highest level, you could even include skill ranks, terrain elevation and so on.

Thanks for these great suggestions :trulycheers:! Providing options is a good solution for advanced features. The Arena Privileges system we introduced recently is just ready for adding more optional features.

We recoded some steam api related code and uploaded a new update. Please try again.

And restarting the Steam client may be helpful. Or try the following solution:

Create a steam_appid.txt (content: 576770) file in your ...\Steam\SteamApps\common\LowMagicAge folder, restart Steam and try again.

Any option to store your loot somewhere? Like a bank\stash space for crafting mats or extra weapon for another class you may recruit.

There is. Just Follow the main Quest until You get a Quest to save a banker. Then once that's done it will be avaible in a city.
