ds1 has such a special charm to it; somehow I enjoyed it more than ds3... the dialogues, environments, layouts- it all ties in so neatly, exploring the game was soo fun. dlc was good too.

I played Elden Ring and had so much fun that I went full FromSoft and caught the Dark Souls games on sale recently. Well, it's even better than Elden Ring IMHO and I can't wait to play DS2 & DS3 and yes, the Elden Ring DLC. But, Understanding how the game has evolved and they've managed to make so many good games just feels special to me. I only regret not playing these years ago when they originally came out.

It's good, but it really drops the ball with the boss fights oddly enough. My favorite moments of the game were when I was going through a fortress or new area finding treasures and tools fighting new and interesting enemies. Boss fights in contrast half the time were cool? It's just around 2/3rds of them have something janky that just feels more like luck and every single fight has the nearest bonfire (checkpoint) 5 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ miles away. When people talk about this being a hard game they really mean that it just doesn't understand respecting players time, let me just try again I don't want to walk across the same ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ broken zombie and giant covered road for the 26th time.

Don't get me wrong, a lot of fights were cool, but half of the cool fights have the most obnoxious distance from a checkpoint making me think they weren't great anyways. All in all the game is great, it just misses a lot of polish with things like that.

My biggest problem would be 2 things that are absolutely problems.
1: being vague
2: janky attacks
there are a ton of things that just aren't explained to you, I still don't know how magic exactly works in that game, I don't know what maybe a quarter of the items do or are even for and I still don't understand how the hell anyone is supposed to know how to access a large portion of locations. Artorias, and priscilla are two bosses that just I can't imagine being accessible for a normal person, artorias especially, I only knew you could fight him because I heard so much about him beforehand, I still had to look up a guide to figure you need to go to a random corner of a random part of the map and kill a random enemy then go kill this specific golem that's in this one random area over here and then come back and a ghost might magically appear from a rune that's over there and THEN you can get to the dlc area. It's a massive flaw in an otherwise pretty good game.

Jank. What I mean by this is how there will be bosses and enemies where they break the fundamental game, titanite demons especially are the worst offenders, frequently their attacks will clip awkwardly to multi-hit you for an instant kill leaving fighting them up to luck. Bed of chaos is a gimmicky boss based around platforming and pushing you which shows you within the first 5 seconds why the rest of the game does not focus around that. There's a bit here and there too, but for the most part those two enemies are the worst about it, other than that, this might be my own opinion, non-humanoid bosses usually aren't done very well. Giant creature like enemies will usually amount to a large untouchable object that doesn't exactly feel compelling? I think it's that because you know they can't make fast moves because they take up such a large amount of space they feel like a slightly wobbly tower that might have a damage box appear with this frequency. It doesn't feel like a fight or a fantastical and heroic battle between a lowly human and this gigantic dragon. Instead it feels like you're poking a very agitated lump of flesh for about 15 minutes that might roll over so you should move out of the way when it does that.

spoilers: I also think the final boss was a let down, I like the design and fight, I just think that again maybe don't shove an ENTIRE NEW AREA between the last bonfire and the fight, put the fight at the bottom of the ghost stairs and show the area outside the fight area. It was also ballsy to make the fight trivial if you knew how to parry, that was relieving because even if that fight still would have taken maybe 16 tries without parrying, I would probably have just said ♥♥♥♥ it and moved on to the 2nd game well before that just because of the distance. It's just pointless.

Still, when the game has its highs, it has its highs but from what I've heard all the other souls-games from fromsoft are much better.
