Optimal Netplay Settings & Desync Reporting
Hello Everyone!

As we rollout an overhauled and entirely new netplay system, we're expecting lots of errors, desyncs, and all the things that make a game release fun!

So to help minimize those problems and maximize your netplay experience, we wanted to take some time to talk about how to optimize your game for netplay and also report desyncs and logs.

What is a desync?

What is a desync? It's a situation where you and your opponent are not playing the same game! At some point a couple frames get missed in a rewind, one player's CPU rewinds an effect slower or faster than your partner's - and suddenly your opponent is hitting you on their screen, but punching the air at nothing stupidly on your screen.

To some extent, desyncs will always happen. If you're playing from Russia to Brazil, chances are you will desync. However there are steps we can take to minimize desyncs from happening, and how to report them so we can make the netplay better over the next couple weeks.

How do I prevent desyncs?

  • Play people in your own region!
That means the same continent, the same part of the world. We have a discord server setup so you can find players in your region, which you can join here!

  • Set Optimal Netplay Settings
This is pretty easy. Optimal netplay settings mean minimizing your graphical effects as much as possible so you do not strain your CPU. How do we do that?

    1) When you launch Ougon, do not change any settings in the configuration tool. Play windowed mode, without being full screen, at the default resolution.

    2) In your options make sure BG Display and Display Shadows are on Simplified. and Save Options are the same as your opponent, which is by default, Never Save

  • Do not enable debug mode in your lobby by default.
We'll want to enable this mode for diagnosing desyncs, but this mode creates extra logs, and thus increases lag. For completely optimal play you'll have this disabled!

How do I stop desyncs and help improve the netplay?

When you find you're having a lot of issues or desyncs, you can help us improve the netplay by submitting a log with your opponent!

In order to do that, when you create your lobby, you'll enable debug mode for extra logging to your log files. Here's how that works!

Every game you play will create a file, "debug.log" in your Steam folder, likely under C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Umineko Golden\

Debug.log will disappear and recreate each time relaunch the game, so anytime you experience a desync, close the game, and pull this file. Take both yours and your opponents for the same game, and submit them to our #bugreporting channel in the discord above, along with your regions.

Analyzing these files over release week will help us extraordinarily as we scale up to full release and test our net-play. Thank you for your continued support and happy mashing!
