Vanilla experience or modded?
So it's been quite a few years since I played this. And I remember how terrible the game was in the beginning (classic SE) with its port. I do some casual modding nowadays in games I enjoy, nothing major. Just with the help of Nexusmods.

Now I'm thinking of going in entirely fresh again, but I was wondering if going totally vanilla would be alright now. Or mods are defintely worth the improvements they bring, be it QoL or performance.
As I saw on Nexus that there is a massive amount of mods and popular/recommended modlists. All of which take a bit more than just unpacking a ZIP into the .exe folder.

FAR/SpecialK, ReShade and a bunch of other stuff.

a controller is by far the best QoL you can do.

i didn't feel any particular need for graphics mods myself.

How's performance after all the patches? I remember requiring FAR mod just to get fullscreen working somewhat alright way back around release.

A lot people complain about low texture quality too, making the game look really mid in places. But it isn't all that bad then from your point of view.
didn't experience any performance issues outside the water shader being a bit wonky. full screen etc all worked out of the box.

i think there was a patch few years back that fixed a lot of things the mods used to be for, also remember something about that update breaking HD textures. really not 100% sure on the last part or if it's been fixed since.

but the game looked good enough for me, certainly nothing that broke immersion.

Sounds great! Then I'll definitely give it a try once again after I complete what I want in my other games.

FAR/SpecialK
FAR/SpecialK is really good. It upgrades all the textures and adds a lot to QoL (without it I find the game textures quite blurry).
It doesn't take very long to install so I really recommend it.

That's the only mod I installed, I didn't see any other that seemed really worth it (for me).

I downloaded 1440p cutscenes from Nexus which are far more clear than the native 900p(?). I also used a mouse mod as I do kbm and it works great after some slight tweaking. And special k of course.
