Crashing on Startup on PC
If the game crashes on startup and does not open an error log text file, you can try the following:

Make sure XNA Redistributable is installed
Steam should automatically install it, but you can also get it officially from here[www.microsoft.com].

Try the OpenGL Branch in Steam
Do this by Right Clicking the game in Steam -> Properties-> Betas -> Select "opengl" from the dropdown.

If neither of these work and you do not get any error, feel free to post a topic and we can try to sort it out.

Even though it wasn't on startup, the OpenGL branch solved no error log crashes I was getting. Happened like 5 times before I got to Theo in chapter 1. Several times on screen transitions and once while talking to Theo just before the line where it zooms in. Both full screen and windowed. Steam also thought it was still running for a little bit after the crashes. No crashes so far after switching up to chapter 3 now.
after i changed it to "opengl" the game did a little update and it runs again thx so much

I did both and neither of them work, it loads the game, goes to the Matt Makes Games screen, freezes and crashes, here's the error log Celeste Error Log

Opengl fixed it for me.

Devs should fix this asap. I was close to refuding it and wait for a discount on nintendo switch.
You guys might loose sales because of this. Because if you buy a game and can't start it many ppl will just refund and pirate a working version of it.
Here's the error code I got, neither helped and the beta isn't even in the dropdown for me

The game has a crash/hang on startup problem in Fullscreen mode on the XNA/DirectX version (default) on Windows 10. Disable Fullscreen Optimizations on Celeste.exe (found in game's root directory) allows the game to start in Fullscreen mode.

Nice, turning on Disable Fullscreen Optimizations worked for me as well. I have Realtek Audio with Nahimic (UWP) installed, a different sound optimizing application.

Verify that a suitable graphics device is installed.

Make sure the desktop is not locked, and that no other application is running in full screen mode.

Avoid running under Remote Desktop or as a Windows service.

These don't work for me unfortunately - It loads to startup screen saying "celeste" and I hear the theme music but nothing else - Help?
This game just refuses to run, what should I do?
Thank you, switching to the OpenGL branch fixed my crash on game-launch issue entirely.
