I feel like her dying just made it feel like it was "a curse," when really it was about a family that had very unfortunate things happen to them. A more interesting ending is the idea of moving forward and not letting all the terrible things that have happened "define our lives" (such as the sealing up of the rooms and insistence that something awful no matter what they did).
