So what really happened to barbara and Molly?
I mean I guess we should assume barbara was killed by the boyfriends as he also went missing, but man Mollys story they leave really open ended she doesn't even die at the end so I have no idea what happened to her,

I kinda feel like Molly was sent to bed without dinner for misbehaviour and then ate something toxic.

Interesting theory! That gerbil food/Toothpaste combo made her start hallucinating and then killed her haha

Yeah, and I think its supposed to be Christmas and the berries she plucks from the (not sure if real or fake) holly decoration are poisionous. I think there's that and the stuff she was "hunting" in her dream was perhaps sleep eating? I was hoping for a supernatural twist since that's what the story was marching towards but eh....

Barbara: likely killed by accident by her boyfriend, with the 2nd floor guard railing involved in some way; and boyfriend likely died in the process of trying to dispose of her corpse.

Molly posioned herself with her "food" choices - gerbil food, toothpaste, and what looks like holly berries? Not a good diet for a child.
ahh i had forgotten about holly good call guys
...and you call yourself a doctor! (/joke)
Molly has a picture in her bedroom that shows the tenticle at the bottom of the ocean.
I think it was also a hallucination but the fact that we can't be sure is why it's so good.
As for Barbara, well, apparently there were costumed guys running around, maybe they did get to her and her boyfriend. Who knows? The designers probably :P
The game shows molly eating many things in her room before the story starts going weird. One of the things she eats is the red berrys, I think they might have been poisonous. That could have trigered the hallucinations.
Nobody knows what happened to barbara. As it said in the story, the police believed the boyfriend was the culprit, and since he disappeared after that, it's a valid theory. Doesn't make sense for him to put the ear in the music box though. Then again, it doesn't make sense that some random comic maker would know the secret for opening the finch's basement when even edith didn't know. The masked men were likely a fabrication because the news broadcaster hammed up the story an awful lot.

As for the child, yeah, holly berries are poisonous, but not lethally so. 2 berries can cause vomiting and diarrhea. She was precocious enough to have a lot of books and science-y material in her room so I presume she wasn't a toddler.

So yeah, I dunno.
According to Wikipediia, while Holly is poisonous it isn't that poisonous.

"Holly berries contain alkaloids, caffeine, and theobromine and are generally regarded as toxic to humans, though their poisonous properties are overstated and fatalities almost unknown. Accidental consumption may occur by children or pets attracted to the bright red berries. The berries are emetic. This is described as being due to the drug ilicin, though caffeine and theobromine found throughout the plant are much more toxic, generally, to dogs and cats."

Basically it makes you vomit, but that's about it.
But who knows what else she ate whilst she was hallucinating / daydreaming. The things she's eating whilst play acting out her imagination could have caused or contributed to her death.
I was quoting the entry on Ilex aquifolium, European Holly. The toxicity claim in the Holly article are inconsistent with other parts of the same article.

"Hence the cut branches, especially of I. aquifolium, are widely used in Christmas decoration. The fruits are generally slightly toxic to humans, and can cause vomiting and diarrhea when ingested."
SPOILERS!!!!

With Molly i was caught between two possibilities, most likely it was food poisoning that has been mentioned, the other i thought may be that she saught food outside her window (or just because she was confined in her room and saught freedom), climbing the big tree her dad told her not to and fell off to her death. There are some points that work well with this and some that don't. Like how she was a cat climbing the tree with ease, then a owl that flew through the air, then a shark that was tumbling down a mountaint into the ocean (that is right bellow the tree), then swimming in the ocean for a bit. Though it works less when the whole peice returns her to her bed.

But throwing it out there as another possibility because Molly is never really explained in detail as to what exactly killed her.

It's not really possible that she fell off the tree and got to write her journal.
Holly berries can cause vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, and drowsiness. Poor Molly probably went back to her bed to sleep. Last time I got really serious food poisoning, I remember having terrible nightmares and unusually realistic dreams. It's possible that the berries caused strange dreams and woke Molly. She had enough time to write in her journal but she died later in the night or even the next day in the hospital.
