Crash to desktop troubleshooting guide
We've written this troubleshooting guide to describe solutions that helped most often to resolve crash issues reported to us. If you are experiencing crashes, these solutions are likely to help. If none of them will resolve the issue, please contact us for further support.

Validate game files
Game files can become corrupted over time, especially after an update to the game.

To verify them on Steam, please follow these steps:
1. Open your Steam library.
2. Right-click on UBOAT.
3. Select "Properties".
4. Click on the "Local Files" tab.
5. Click "Verify integrity of game files".

Note: While this guide is about crashes, file verification also helps in a case of elongated triangles or black squares appearing when looking at a specific object. It's a common side effect, if graphical data is corrupted. Example:

Driver issue
Occasionally, certain graphic driver versions may cause crashes to desktop in the game when they are paired with a specific graphic card model. To rule out this possibility, please try to roll back to a more stable version of the driver and check, if that helps.

In case of NVIDIA, we strongly recommend installing "Studio" version of the driver. These drivers are updated less often, but they are known to be very stable and are unlikely to cause any issues.

Minimum requirements
Please double check, if your hardware meets minimum requirements stated on the store page:

OS: Windows 7 64 Bit / Windows 8 64 Bit / Windows 10 64 Bit / Windows 11 64 Bit
Processor: Core i3 3.1 GHz or AMD Phenom II X3 2.8 GHz
Memory: 6 GB RAM
Graphics: GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB (1080p Low) or AMD equivalent

Laptops with graphics cards that lack dedicated memory require significantly more system memory than the amount stated above. This is because the graphics card must share the system's main memory with the CPU in those cases.

Overheating
CPU overheating is another common crash cause. This type of crashes tend to happen some time after launching the game and they tend to happen more often in warm months. To check, if your CPU doesn't overheat, launch the game and inspect CPU temperatures using a tool like HWiNFO:

Please check technical documentation from your CPU's manufacturer to find out what is its normal operating temperature range.

Virtual memory
Unless PC doesn't have much more memory than required by the game to run, certain other processes in the background may sometimes compete with the game for memory and cause a crash.

This problem can be easily resolved, by using virtual memory paging file feature in Windows and ensuring that there is at least 10 GB of free space on the associated drive. Please follow this guide, to check, if you have this setting enabled:

Anti-virus
Most anti-viruses are unlikely to cause any issues with the game. AVG and Avast are currently the only known exceptions. While they typically don't cause issues, they sometimes are triggered by frequent updates to a program and disallow it to run.

If you have either of these antiviruses installed, and there were recent updates to UBOAT, and you can't run the game from the launcher - please check if disabling the antivirus will resolve this problem.

Corrupted save file
Save files can become corrupted, especially if they are being stored on a magnetic drive. If loading a save file ends in a crash, please check, if any other save files are loading.
