Me and a few friends just purchased this
And boy must I say while we are all super excited about this game it all seems a little intimidating.

Like for 1.) I am not too good at math, so what would be an ideal position for me in the sub?
2.) is it as much to juggle as it seems it is?
3.) how long should we expect out of an average mission time so we can plan accordingly

What do you mean not good at math? It's just basic arithmetic that's needed, not to solve differential equations. Honestly I'd just get my crew and get going. If you have absolutely no idea about U-Boot warfare of the 2nd ww it can be steep curve for sure.
I'd just recommend watching some YouTube tbh.

Hey Desmon, no need for mathbrain.. i have not :) .. but i reccomend just start playing with someone in multiplayer, and most will gladly tell u how to use the tdc, map, sonar and so on. ive played u-boat games as long as they have been around(yes..back in the 80`s :) ), so this sim was a dream come true for me. The devs takes update rarely but it is still a lot of fun. i usually play singleplay myself to better my skills at the diff operations. mainly all you need is to read the manual to get a understanding of how things work, ( target speed, target course and distance etc...). there are some really cool updates coming, kinda get the feeling we get a sort of silent hunter 5 but ton better so i think it will be exciting to follow this game :) ANYHOOO!!...Happy new year from Norway and pardon my english skills..getting old :):)

You do not need to be good a math. Only calculations required is a speed measurement. Speed = Distance ÷ Time. I speaka good englishu.

1. Engine Operator, Helmsman, Dive Officer, Sonarman, Captain, Navigator, in that order,

I do not like math too but I have learnt methods with minimal math and formulas that i found i saved in a excel sheet to reduce the math on my brain.

2. Not if you stick to your role.

I would say that common meta is that players stick to doing one role in a session, tho I seen games where its a race to do anything but those boats tend to not stay like that as sooner or later people will leave because people do not wanna race to do a job that someone else might steal. Ask for one job from the captain, then do your best to only do that.

3. experienced captains can do get one attack in 30min after game start and be done with it in 40-60 min But these games might not feel too rewarding so a common length of a mission with multiple attacks by an experienced captain is 2-3h

An inexperienced captain might need 3-6h due to their lack of knowledge how to best set up the server settings for their learning needs.

Common mistakes is to play at day thinking you need it to see the enemy but daylight do more damage to your sight than enemies sight. You can not get close to get data and because its bright you wont clearly see when they detect you which you can during night as the enemy launches flares. Another common mistake is that new players do not realize that by default all torp settings is enabled, and Convoy zigging and Warship ping by default is enabled making it hard for new players. I would recommend turning off all of those settings mentioned above. I also recommend to play Noreweigan sea or bay of biscay as those oceans are deep and you can dive away from enemy easier.
I would not play with Small convoy or on a date no earlier than 1940 this is because convoys become too small with too few targets to and too small targets making it harder to practice shooting on.
