Comprehensive List of Mount & Blade: Warband Fixes for Windows
Funny story. I have a fairly old and badly beaten Toshiba Laptop(Satellite L40-B to be precise with Windows 8.1 installed) that suffers from a multitude of problems especially when running this game. I have a fairly long save in the game with a female character(currently running at 1300+ days) and I want to see it come to an end. But due to a multitude of errors I encounter, my laptop always blue screens or crashes, freezes, and just prohibits me from enjoying the game for long, and it has been stressing me out, until today where I was finally able to fix it by trying out all the things listed here.

These problems that I encounter include:
1) PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_ERROR(atikmdag.sys)
2) Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered
3) Random crashes to desktop with the game not responding
4) Some graphical glitches
5) Lots of windows error affecting not only Warband but everything else done in the laptop
6) Alt+Tabbing issues

Most of these you will find online with a simple google search, but it's nice to have a compilation of repairs all in one thread, right? Please be advised that most of these fixes requires you to at least know some technical stuff before tampering with your device. Some of what you will do here may end up losing your laptop's warranty(in my case it doesn't matter, my laptop is around 5-6 years old already) or even make your problems worse if you don't know what you're doing and may ultimately lead you to bricking your laptop, so follow at your own discretion. For me though, I barely know anything about the things that I did but hey, my laptop improved its performance by a mile afterwards so all is well, right?

This guide will not only show you how to repair problems with Warband, but also with windows itself. Good luck and I hope this fixes some of your problems too!

To start with, you need:
1) A knowledge as to how to analyze and utilize the Task Manager
2) To know how to follow guides down to the dot.
3) A sense of personal liability when things fail. It is not my fault if you ruin your machine in the process of not following the guides correctly.

Take note, all of these were done on a Windows 8.1 device, so some fixes might not work for you.

Thanks to all the internet people who came up with these fixes. You all rock! :lunar2019coolpig:

Easy Warband Fixes:

File Verification and Reinstall:

Sometimes you just need to verify your Steam files or reinstall the game. To verify your game files, go to your steam library and right click on your game, go to Properties>Local Files, and choose "Verify Integrity of Game Files". Wait for it to finish and restart steam.

To reinstall, simply right click your game in steam library, click uninstall, wait for it to finish, and then reinstall.

Graphics:

Usually in Warband you will experience some graphics errors like lagging, screen tearing and such, most of these can be easily fixed by just playing around with the game's internal configurations. If you are experiencing some graphical lag, it might be due to your device not being able to handle the graphics(which is very unlikely with modern devices).

Start with removing some effects like particles and shadows and see if your game gets better. if not decrease some of the other effects until your game runs smoothly. It may look like some blurry oil pastel drawing of a 5 year old, but hey, at least it works. If you want better Graphics, you just have to play around with the game's internal options to get your desired quality.

You can also edit the game's framrate to 60 by going to Configure>Video, which is the maximum Frame Rate that the game can run in from what I've read. Anything lower than that and the game may seem choppy with its animation.

Screen Tearing:

Screen tearing is when you move your camera around and there is like a big cut on your display. It can be very annoying but also easily fixable. Before starting Warband, Click on Configure>Video. From there, check the "Force Vertical Sync" box and press "OK". This works for most devices so there's no harm in trying.

Random Crashes to Desktop:

This is the second longest problem I have with the game. While playing, the game will suddenly crash to the desktop without any explanation as to why. The simple fix is before starting Warband, click on Configure>Advanced, and check "Force Single Threading". I can't explain to you in detail how it works, but it does.

There is also another fix I found online relating to random crashes, and this involves slightly editing a Warband file. Go to your Steam Library, right click on Warband, select "Properties", then Local Files>Browse Local Files, where it will open up a window of your Warband folder. From there select Modules>Native and then open the file named "module"(module.ini). Once there, search for,

disable_moveable_flag_optimization = 0

And change it to

disable_moveable_flag_optimization = 1

Again, I don't know how it fixes the problem, but it does.

Here is a video showing how to do it. Full credits goes to the uploader for this fix.

Alt Tabbing Crashes Games:

If your game crashes when you Alt+Tab, the easiest fix is to go to Configure>Video, and check Start Windowed. You can now alt+tab your games with ease from there. You can also do alt+enter to go to windowed mode, then alt+tab from there, or shift+tab to go to the Steam menu, then alt+tab from there. Maybe one of these fixes will work for you.

If you do not like the look of the game in windowed mode, try assigning steam to run in administrator mode. To do this, right click on your Steam Shortcut, go to Properties>Shortcut, and click Open File Location. Once there, right click on Steam.exe, Go to Properties>Compatibility, and check "Run this program as an administrator". Press apply and OK. This works for some people.

Technical Fixes(follow at your own risk)

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA(atikmdag.sys)

For this problem, there are two main possible causes;

1) You don't have enough ram/you are running through page filing
2) Your Display Drivers are either damaged or not updated properly.

For the first one, the easiest solution is to increase your ram capacity. and no, YOU CANNOT INCREASE YOUR RAM CAPACITY BY DOWNLOADING STUFF ONLINE. You have to buy a physical ram stick compatible with your device to increase your ram. To know what ram you have in your PC, go to Task Manager(Ctrl+Alt+Delete>Task manager), then go to Performance, and click the Memory tab under CPU. It will show you something like "15.9GB DDR3" on the upper right side. DDR3, or whatever is shown on yours, is the ram that is compatible with your device.

Now to install your Ram, you can just let the store where you bought your ram or pc/laptop install it for you, better if you buy it from the same place that you bought your device, because if not, you have to open up your laptop or PC(which will void your warranty) and do it yourself, which might end up Badly if you don't have an idea about the parts and the disassembly, so I do not recommend doing this by yourself(I did though because I'm poor).

Also, only buy Ram from trusted sellers. If you buy Ram from some random person, they might give you a faulty one, wasting your money. It might cost abit but the expansion will not only help you fix your game, it will also help you do more things with your laptop.

If you have alot of ram and is still experiencing this error, try disabling Page Filing on your device. Follow the first part of this guide for details.[www.tomshardware.com] Only do this when you have a huge excess of ram(which I do, I have 16gb).

But if you are running through Page Filing, that only means your device is really running low on ram and is resorting to using parts of your hard drive as Ram. If your device is doing this, chances are you will still encounter the error, but if you really have no other choice then you can increase the capacity. Click the link for disabling page filing, follow the guide, and once you get to Virtual Memory, instead of ticking the checkbox for No Paging File, click on Custom Size, and set your initial size to your Ram size x 1024 and the maximum size to double of that. So if you have 2GB of Ram, set the initial to 2048 and the maximum to 4096. Press okay, then apply and okay and then restart your device.

If you have 8GB of ram or more, you do not have to do this.

If you are having problems with your Display Drivers(atikmdag.sys or similar errors), follow this guide and it will help you get it fixed[windowsreport.com]. Note that you do not have to follow everything the guide says such as reformatting your device and so on. Just try the fixes one at a time and them see if your problem is fixed. You can also follow this guide for a clean install of your display drivers (for AMD Drivers only).[community.amd.com]

It is also possible that your device is overheating. There are multiple ways to cool down your device but the most important one is to have your device physically cleaned. A clogged fan will struggle to cool your device down, so having it cleaned will really help alot. I do not suggest cleaning your device on your own, have an expert do it for you. While you're at it, have them change your CPU's thermal paste to something better. This will also decrease your laptop's tendency to overheat.

The last fix with regards to overheating that I will not recommend but might help you out is undervolt your CPU's power, meaning decreasing the amount of power running through it, therefore decreasing its overall max temperature. While technically safe to do, you shouldn't do it if you're not sure of what you're doing. I did this with my laptop and it helped alot so I am adding this fix here for you guys to see. Here is a link to the guide, it is a trial-and-error process but it'll work.

Display Driver has Stopped Responding and has Recovered:

If you are experiencing an event where your display crashes and this error appears, follow this guide to fix it[www.drivethelife.com]. Warning: DO NOT DOWNLOAD ANYTHING FROM THAT LINK. Simply follow the guide for the fix, you do not need any downloads for it.

100% Disk Usage

If you go to taskbar and notice that your Disk is always at 100%, you can go and disable Superfetch. Follow the "Disable from Services" guide here to do it[www.technipages.com]. This might be causing your random crashes so maybe this might fix it.

I did some other things here and there but I forgot what they are sorry :(

Anyways here's the list of fixes that may help you with your problems, hopefully some of them will work for you! Have fun and enjoy!

If you have any issues feel free to comment them here and maybe we can look for a solution together to add to the list :)

You suggest Restoro to fix system/video/driver issues but if you double check its reviews and on microsoft, they say to BEWARE! :/

I'm having some serious FPS issues....
Ive tried several fixes for this and trial error tweaks but its not improving.
it seemed ok in the beginning but now when battles of 100+ it just becomes unplayable. Mostly during sieges.
my task manager memory for M&B process is maxed out at 780mb if thats any significance/indication of a prob?

I have read the game mem usage should be up to 2gb? hmm maybe this is my issue? :/
read you can change the pagefile to boost that but also read its useless so i didnt want to risk it yet.

Anyone have any ideas for this in relation to AMD integrated graphics?
i have heard this game just wont run on some modern machines no matter what you try. Hell i have a friend who actually bought an old Dell (with vista i assume), off eBay, just to play this game... LOL!
On this note, i have tried 'overriding' the games settings with the radeon settings panel and i think it worked for a while, but cant be certain. Am still testing this actually.

Shame, as although this game has a bit of a learning curve, its very rewarding later when you have securely established yourself... (and understand the general dynamics)..however it can get a bit repetitive at that point...hah.

Lenovo laptop, 310abr.
WIN 10 Home. x64.
AMD A12-9700P R7, 10 compute cores, 4C+6G, 2500mhz, 4 cores, 4 logical processors.
12gb ram, (ddr4 memory).
(page file space 1.75gb)
BIOS version date 17.04.2017 ...(just adding the date for now).

cheers

Issue: Stuttering and lags in menus and world map, while having smooth gameplay in battles. Nvidia GPU.
Info: It seems this might be connected to rendering of the custom cursor. Moving mouse a lot makes the problem worse.
Fix: Lower mouse polling rate (i chose my mouse minimum ov 125 Hz) and kill NVDisplay.Container.exe process (Try killing all of them, some may not be killable)
You may have to do this every time you restart or boot your computer.

Is seems the process might come back. Use program like Process Lasso to disallow it so it stays dead.

Better solution is here https://gtm.you1.cn/app/48700/discussions/3/2992045158730194432/
