EDIT:
There is no simple solution to this problem as some might think. As I mentioned, TaleWorlds has been fixing this game as of late and my game has been working good. So far, 5 of the kings in my game have left the game with no hiccups and all the nobles that belonged to them have moved on to other kingdoms.
Why not just bite the bullet and trash that game of yours and start a new one?
You mentioned playing a game and installing claimants. They don't leave the game after their kingdom is defeated ( but sometimes they do). They either join another faction as a vassel or remain on the map as a rogue trouble maker.
You mentioned playing a game " In the future ", with claimants. I left out that word "future". Just offering a heads up to that future game.
He was one of my "Friends" before I screwed him over and kinda feel bad. Only reason I gunned for his Kingdom was that he was a particularly bad ruler and I wanted to take a Kingdom that might as well not have been there for their idleness.
He's currently landless and out of the game, is he likely to come back?
easy as ♥♥♥♥.
"Why not just bite the bullet and trash that game of yours and start a new one?"
Over 900 ingame days spended on that one and now you ask me to do same and in worst case of scenario repeat whole thing? ♥♥♥♥ that ♥♥♥♥. That is not how you fix games.
"You mentioned playing a game and installing claimants. They don't leave the game after their kingdom is defeated ( but sometimes they do). They either join another faction as a vassel or remain on the map as a rogue trouble maker."
What the heck are you talking about. I made it pretty clear that I haven't been doing anything with claimants. I'm here talking about the sultan who refuses to freaking give up when he doesn't even exists anymore and holds no fiefs nor any vassals. By all means he should be considered DEAD by now. Guy has been missing over 400 days anyway. King missing a year and still having a faction even without having anyone in it?
I tried capturing as many as I could, but they constantly escaped.
I am guessing there is nothing that can be done?
So, after running around looking for lords of the ghost faction I finally found one guy and spoke to him. Then I used a cheat that allowed me to join their faction. And after I joined their faction they inherited my castles/towns and all the ghost lords finally appeared. I waited until they sieged a castle and took it then I switched back to my main faction and now all I have to do is take back the castle they took.
I think what triggered the ghost factions to happen is that I took their castles/towns while we weren't at war. But, now we're at war. So since they're the last faction and we're at war I can beat them the way they're supposed to be beaten and their faction will be eliminated like normal.
Edit: It works but doesn't work... Right at the moment I eliminate the faction the game crashes. I can't even get the acheivment for it.
Did you eventually figure it out?
You have to change the state of the ghost faction to defeated with a savegame editor!
1) Download https://github.com/int19h/WarBender/releases/tag/1.0.4
2) Start Warbender and open your current Savegame.
3) On the left side panel go to Factions -> Kingdom of ... (select your ghosting kingdom).
4) On the right panel go to entry "slots" and to entry "21 (faction_state).
5) Change the value to " sfs_defeated ".
6) Save the savegame (overwrite your current or save as a new one.)
7) Start Warband, load the savegame, check if faction is defeated in the faction screen.
8) If so, wait on the world map for some seconds. ( I just did STRG+SPACE. )
A screen should appear, and the steam achievement pops up.

I have unlocked "Golden Throne" TODAY!
Good luck everyone, drink on me! :D
rather than that, i'd say it took almost 4 years to find an appropriate solution.
