PSA: Most community servers are not dead
The servers with zero players on them? Yes, they are indeed not dead. Some of them are, but many servers gain players if the circumstances are right.

DISCLAIMER: In my opinion, small community servers are superior to bigger server chains due to the closer community in them. Most players are requlars who know each other, as opposed to big server chains which attract anyone regardless of whether they frequent the server. I don't hate Uncletopia (in fact, I have never played on it) and the other big ones, but I prefer to frequent small servers.

There are many complaints about community servers, about how Unletopia, Skial (and any other big server chain) are the only options, most maps run 24/7 2Fort, Dustbowl and Hightower, community servers are full of wacky modes/plugins, wacky modes have no players, community servers have no players in general unless you go to the big server chains, the server admins are tyrants, just to mention a few. I'm here to bring in the hypothesis that the "dead servers" may be more alive than you think.

Simply by joining an empty server, you might kickstart a chain reaction of players joining. First come the regulars if there are any, then the randoms. It takes a bit of luck, but a single person joining empty servers is often the initial spark that causes a chain reaction. This is a legitimate phenomenon that happens in community servers.

Of course, only sitting in an empty server and hoping for players to join is a stupid idea. You have better things to do than running around in a ghost town. No point getting bored and waiting for nothing to happen. (unless it's digital archaeology, then it's mysterious and exciting) Because of that, I suggest playing with a friend to bridge the time until maybe someone joins. If you have no friends, that's rough. I feel you, as I'm a loner too.

Did you also know that you can join community servers while you are queueing for other servers? While you're clearly not busy playing, given the "Queued for Casual", you can jump between, or play around on a community server. Maybe you should turn that into a habit - While the queue is going, take your time to jump on a community server that caught your attention.

While you're waiting for people to join, maybe play a different game instead. If you don't actively play TF2, there is no harm in staying in some server and waiting for it to come alive. My point is that you don't have to look at the sky forever until someone joins. Empty servers really aren't that demanding of your attention.

With all that said, I encourage you to discover new servers to frequent. If you're doing something else like watching videos, there may not even be a downside to waiting. Just remember: You have the power to singlehandedly revive community servers. Once it says 1/32, the chance for more players joining greatly increases, as it's no longer filtered out by the "Hide empty servers" checkbox.

EDIT 1: Added a disclaimer and a new paragraph.

EDIT 2: Added a new paragraph to address a common counter-argument.

Good thread, but tf2 players would rather drag their nuts through 5km of broken glass and scorching sun, than to play on community servers

It's still worth a shot. Maybe I can convince a few people to try out community servers.
And if not, at least I have this thread to refer to anytime someone mentions community servers being dead. Now I need one for digital archaeology, and maybe for the eternal "Is TF2 dead" debate (though, I've covered that one in other threads that I can refer to).

Did you see the post of the guy who spent 6 hours queueing into matches without ever seeing a single person?

I think I remember that thread. I don't know how it went anymore, but there were a bunch of those threads where someone queued forever without success at some point.

Also, you just reminded me that I should have mentioned that you can search for casual matches and play on or hop between community servers at the same time. Might edit that post soon(TM).

I think I saw a Reddit post a couple days ago that was talking about the same problem. Basically someone was advocating for more community servers to be made, and encouraged people to actually play on them.

If you ask me, it's pretty stupid that people would rather slog through bot and cheater hell than play on Uncletopia because it's "not casual" or it's "too competitive"

Uncletopia isnt even competitive like everyone wants you to believe. It’s still 12v12, the only difference is that these players actually have their monitors turned on and actually play the game rather than being fresh installs or people with 1x1 pixel monitors. People who only queue for 2fort to farm on players then get mad when people are actually playing the game

And there reason on why they don’t want to go to community servers are because of “bad admins” and “bad maps” and “bad plugins”.

I've joined my friend a few times on Uncletopia when the Casual queue doesn't work (the actual problem with the game, not the bots) and dude I'm not even joking when I say I literally do not recognize a single difference except people might be slightly more likely to stack classes (but the people on the forums complaining about it being too 'sweaty' also hate the idea of imposing class limits).

Edit: No wait also they only play on garbage maps. That's the only real difference. The people on Uncletopia are identical in every way to the people on Casual, the only difference is you play Upward then Badwater then Upward then Badwater then Upward then Badwater then Upward then Badwater then Upward then Badwater.

And people nowadays act like people being good and playing the game well is a crime against humanity or something

Tf2 is the only game where playing the video game as it was intended is seen as a bad thing

Then they wonder why Valve isn't updating their dead game with very few players after they've driven all the normal people away, lol.
