What are the starting companions best at?
I've played a few hours and i realize that the companions can be modified and tailored to different classes. That being said however and not completely understanding all the mechanics; I imagine some companions may be better suited to some classes than others. Or barring that, some companions may be of a more suitable 'alignment' or have character traits that are more prone to party disharmony. The lizard prince is a bit of a ♥♥♥♥ for instance and I don't imagine I'll like him as my tank, but maybe he's the best option... I feel compelled to use a ranger/ranged character and build around that but perhaps I'll have to go melee class and build around that instead depending on my companion options. Does anyone have any tips for a harmonious party?

All of the companions can be anything you want. The only actual difference in any of the companions is their unqie Source ability. Anything beyond that is a matter of if you want to role play them in any way

but if you want anyone to start thief good luck, if you ask them to be a rogue they will ad 2 points into sneak like absolute madmen, its extremely frustrating that I have to do all the thieving on my main character.

Some very basic stuff tho,
dwarves start with +1 sneak and +10% vit so they are good tanks, thieves.
elves start with +1 loremaster so probably a good idea to have them be ur identifier, any non-tank fighting class (flesh sac).
humans start with +2 initiate and +5% crit, suitable to play any role except rogues since the gauranteed backstab crits make the +5% kinda pointless
lizards start with +1 persuasion and flame breath so probably good option to make em pyromancers/<persuadors>

All that said, there are extremely MINOR bonuses and will be horrifyingly overshadowed by your gear, stat distribution, skill choices so it really doesn't matter, except maybe don't make ur lizards hydro aero mages, feels bad to breathe fire in the rain ;).

Okay, these were something of the answers that i was looking for. The unique source ability is something I'll start looking at (save before meeting them and reload after seeing what it is) the companions source more closely. Good to get a reminder of racial bonuses as it could make a difference as to who I make into what. Although it frustrated me that I couldn't modify my companions a tad more after choosing their class.

One more thing to think about is Ifan's source ability is a wolf summon, so making him a summoner would increase its effectiveness.

Once you leave the Act 1 area (you'll know cause it says you'll never be able to return), you can then respec everyone in your party as much as you want, so I wouldn't fret about it too much.

hard part about that is that a summoner can only have one summon out at a time... and even the default summon is better than the wolf at 10 summoning :x... so ifans wolf is best as just a 0 skill summon to take hits

Ifan should be a ranged character - with points in summoning

Technically there are a few edge cases where the wolf is better, mainly because it can trigger taunt to guarantee that it will take hits for the team as opposed to just hoping it will. But yeah in general that is the worst of the special source abilities, though oddly enough the custom character source shield is insane, armor and magic armor regen every round goes hard.

Meanwhile, 7 whole years ago...

Still, if you ask me the custom bubble ability is alright, but anything that feels like defensive play is typically already showing weakness in your setup. That said, if you build a true support character for fun, its an excellent thing to have. Stack that with Mend Metal, Soothing Cold, Heart of Steel and Restoration while you use the Soul Bond or whatever the spell is in Summoning that mirrors the healing one character gets to another and you can literally regenerate your entire armor bars instantly every turn for a few turns.

Also, no, I wouldn't even say there are edge cases when comparing the Incarnate to the Wolf as anything the Incarnate is able to do aside from taking hits will always be better than just the wolf taking hits. There's very little reason to use any of the summons that aren't the incarnate simply because Larian made the Incarnate the most adaptable and just best summon. Taunt is also kinda unreliable in the game, being more of a suggestion that they attack that target rather than a guarantee. Enemies will always try to AoE your party in that taunt if possible and some abilities will attack others regardless.
