You need to build power storage units, each unit holds 500 power. They can be crafted at the BCU

built two but i still need to use the generator to get past the 500 cap mark i even have a solar panel and still cap out at 500 unless i turn the gen on

yes using the generator is the only way to put power in the storage unit build more storage unit to store more power from the generator.

1 - Farm fat animal & plant to make oil for generator to produce power. Also you can loot oil in hunter's base...

2 - Solar panel & wind turbine don't give much power & so it's useless to craft them when you start the party, it's more for an advanced game after +24h of gameplay... But at last maybe just build one of each just for fun/curiousity (without update them, better way to build an another new then upgrade it only when you will have much more items after many hour farming).

Done, no more other way to have power...
