they didnt seize spanish colonies because there was no reason to, in the allied view there was no reason to anger the spanish no matter who won, it would not go over well in the minds of many Spaniards. and the colonies were not particularly valuable anyways

Thank you for the reply! There is plenty talk online about German forces entering / occupying Spanish territory, but very little on the potential Allied response. Its argued by some that United Kingdom would respond to German forces in Spain just like United Kingdom responded to French forces in Spain a century before.

Then, the territory across the straight seems like the perfect place to occupy and build coastal forces and airbases to contest (even if temporarily) the Western entrance to the Mediterranean, or repel any attempted breakthroughs. Avoiding costly occupation of Spain proper***

In the game, occupying the African side of the Straight closes it to Shipping. What is your opinion on the accuracy of this representation, and why?

Gameplaywise: I don't know 100% of the details but to my understanding you need a high enough ideology with the faction leader and sufficient world tension to join a faction (the only exceptions are focuses that let you join early or being at war with the same enemies as the faction).

Lastly whichever Spain wins will end up joining the respective faction eventually.


Now if we're talking historically, (again, don't quote me on any of this) Republican Spain was a walking disaster filled with infighting due to leftist extremists out of touch with reality (seems familiar) fighting each other just as much as the Nationalists were, all the while their land was being looted and pillaged by the Russian troops sent to "aid" them as foreign involvement was reduced when France made a non-intervention agreement for all major powers to stop sending aid directly to either side and limit involvement to volunteers only.

And this is on top of losing most of their agricultural land at the beginning so they were bleeding money on importing food from the Allies so their economic capacity was also tied to the Allies during and after the war.

The only aid sent to Nationalist Spain was from Italy and Germany who were the main supporters of Franco's regime and sent a lot of arms and volunteers, Portugal also sent advisors.

After the war the Allies most cooperated with Franco through some trade agreements to make sure they would be crippled and dependant on Germany for resources if they ever joined the Axis.

Spain will remain one of the great "What ifs" during the world wars. As I understand, the British Armed Forces were stretched very thin during and leading up to the German invasion of France; In theory, Axis powers in the Mediterranean should be able to exploit this.

Based on what youve outlined here, it seems still unlikely that the Allies would aid Franco direnctly. However I do wonder if the United Kingdom would still take independent action against Italy, similar to how the Royal Navy took the initiative to "Sink" the French Navy, seeing an Italian presence close the Straight as an existential threat
