I commend Final Fantasy's effort to change with each entry, always trying something a little bit new.

Unfortunately, the new gameplay thing (drawing/junctioning) is still under the umbrella of Active Time Battle. I can't believe they insisted on this moronic combat system for so long. Not to mention the persistent random encounters.

Mediocre gameplay was a feature of its six predecessors too (the first FF was the only exception), and they turned out fine in the end. But, this time around, the characters aren't charming enough and the music isn't good enough to elevate an otherwise poor game to a firmly positive experience.

The only exceptional thing about it are the beautiful pre-rendered backgrounds, but that's not enough to justify recommending it.

one of my favorite FF's, also one of the very first i ever played as a kid. worth the play time.
