On getting stuck and unable to continue...
You may have noticed that in the game it is not possible to travel to a city again after you have already visited it. The game engine automatically disables any routes that leads to a previously visited city. This is all good until you stumble into a city with no way out because you have already exhausted all leaving options beforehand.

Normally this wouldn't happen as you should aim to get back to London as quickly as you can, taking the most direct and obvious transport routes. But for people who like to explore as much as they can, it presents a danger to end their run prematurely as they got stuck.

This isn't such a big problem before the additional content is released. It is relatively easy to get trapped in the current version of the game. Poor route design and insufficient testing may be the cause of this. Here are a number of such death-traps I have found (minor spoilers, maybe), with the "journey of no return" in thick arrow:

The Russian trap
Istanbul -> Kabul -> (Omsk) Moscow -> St Petersburg ==> Minsk -> Odessa (dead end)
Istanbul -> Novorossiysk -> Tsaritsyn -> Moscow -> St Petersburg ==> Minsk -> Odessa (dead end)
(More variations exist for this trap)

The Egyptian trap
Suez -> Khartoum -> Jeddah -> Riyadh -> Ha'il -> Cairo ==> Aswan -> Wadi Halfa (dead end)

The Asian traps
Beijing -> Vladivostok -> Yokohama -> Manila ==> Hong Kong (dead end)
Batavia -> Manila ==> Singapore
(May be already patched by the developers)

The Caribbean traps
Port au Prince -> Washington -> Atlanta -> Miami -> Havana ==> Port Royal (dead end)
Port au Prince -> Washington -> New York -> Ottawa -> Winnipeg -> Chicago -> Atlanta -> Miami ==> Havana -> Houston -> New Orleans (dead end)
(More variations exist for this trap)

The American trap
Atlanta -> New York -> Winnipeg ==> Chicago (dead end)
Winnipeg -> New York -> Atlanta ==> Chicago (dead end)

And then there is this situation... I haven't tried it myself, but on paper it is entirely possible for a player to have visited all of Budapest, Khartoum, Bhayi and New Orleans when they reach the end of the Black Rose storyline. I wonder what would happen then if the player is unable to get on any of those routes in Dakar. Heh heh.

At any rate, I believe the developers should add an exception when players are stuck like this, allowing them to re-visit a city and get out of the mess. Unique additional dialogs (like Fogg blaming Passpartout for going in circles) would be welcome too.

On the subject of routes, there should be a shipping route between Beijing and Pyongyang, so if you're traveling North from Hong Kong along the Beijing Railway you can go see the Chinese Opera and pay a visit to Korea without having to get locked up in Vladivostok for four days.

Wow, @vaderence, that is an awesomely useful list.

I've just fallen into the Russian trap in Minsk. Do I have to restart?

If you have already visited Odessa and Istanbul, then sadly, yes. Try not to attempt backtracking unless you consider yourself very well-informed of the routes. Also, on your next journey you may want to keep manual save files as backup.

Hmm I think I've now wasted several days at Minsk staying at the hotel so I had better restart. I would prefer a patch however so it doesn't happen again. I assume this is fixed on the iPad version?

Trapped in Tsaritsyn after going into India, trying to escort someone to Omsk, and getting shipped back but still wantint to go the India route.

Is this likely to be fixed, devs, or should I restart? I was quite far along the Black Rose plot.

These traps are extremely unlikely to be fixed by now. From what you said, you are out of luck if you have already visited Moscow and Astrakhan. Restart your game if this is the case.

You may want to refer to the map I made if you wish to better plan your journey next time.

Seems like I fell into the Russian trap and am now permanently stuck in Tsaritsyn on my first game. Which is frustrating because I had an event that literally forced me back to Moscow so I had no other routes to choose from.

Seems like the dev knows this is a problem but still haven't fixed it a year later. Completely broke my first playthrough, thanks you lazy bastards.

Sad to see this is still unfixed, and never will be... :steamsad:

Yep - Athens -> Thessalonki - > Meteora Valley will cause you to get stuck. Unless there is some conversation choice out of Meteora Valley (or some earlier conversation - conversations in one location often change routes in another)... I have never found it...

Istanbul -> Kabul -> (Omsk) Moscow -> St Petersburg ==> Minsk -> Odessa -> conversation choices will take you to Novorossiysk then you can go to Tehran -> Bandar Abbas and out of Russia. Although if you stop at Tehran before Kabul - even with the conversation choices - it is probably stuck...
