Honest review:

I'm playing this after I've already played Divinity 2: Original Sin and Balder's Gate 3.
I am really enjoying it, the game has some of the best voice actors, even better than the two games just listed.
My only real complaint about this game is that, the quest are hard to find and the puzzles are a bit blah.
Most can be found on a google search though, soooo not to big of a deal breaker.

Combat is quite good, but it is tactical base. Warning though, this game don't care about your feelings. If you put it in tactical mode your first play though, it'll punish you.

Will take about 60 hours to finish. I'm currently at 59 and feel like I'm about 80% done with the game. I do like to find nearly everything though.

You can catch this game on sale, and I'd recommend picking it up if you see it as so.

After finishing my first playthrough, I was curious to see what other people thought about this curious game. Unsurprisingly, DOS 2 and BG 3 popped up multiple times, and having found this game after desperately searching for something to fill the void that DOS 2 left in me, trust me, I know where you're coming from. However, please do not expect a Kickstarter game from 2014 to live up to expectations formed by exceptional games from 2016 and 2023. That can only lead to hurt. Gaming and technology develop frighteningly fast, so a couple of years and some money in the developers pockets can make a world of difference. Rant over, now on to the review.

DOS 1 has a lot of the same core game play as the aforementioned Larian gems, adapting aspects of tabletop rpgs to a computer game. The main attraction, in my opinion, is the creative problem solving the game encourages you to do. Often there are multiple ways to play through quests and combat, so if you find yourself in a sticky situation, some outside the box thinking or a quick google search often helps, or better yet, grab a friend and join your forces in co-op. Local co-op is sadly rare nowadays, and here it's implemented fantastically, Visually DOS 1 holds up. The graphics aren't mind blowing or super realistic, but the environments are quite detailed and pretty. Voice acting can be cheesy, but considering the role playing aspect, it kind of fits the scene. Although the constantly repeated npc voice lines can be grating.

Now despite the praise, this game isn't everyone's cup of tea. There's little to no hand holding, and combat can be quite punishing. New players might have to study builds and techniques to survive, and to get used to saving manually _constantly_. The open world might be inviting to explore, but most of the areas are essentially locked at the start by high level enemies. This can be frustrating to experience through trial and error, as the open world free roaming turns surprisingly linear. The story can also feel messy and many parts of it inconsequential and characters superficial. If you're looking for deep character driven storytelling, you're going to have to rely on your imagination. Getting into the lore requires dedication and reading in-game books. The crafting system is also a chore, and it's a bit immersion breaking, that on high crafting levels, homemade weapons kick legendary or even "divine" loot's butt :D

As for bugs, I personally experienced only a few small ones, and those might be attributed to my crappy computer. I've heard of other people having major ones. Can't speak on their experiences, just thought I'd mention it.

The Source Hunter Temple at the very end of the game was straight up GARBAGE, totally ruined the game for me.

Without searching on the internet, it will be nearly impossible to complete the dungeon. You have to do things that don't make sense within the game's engine.
Everything you know about doors? Forget about it.
Everything you know about teleporting?
Forget about it.

There's several "puzzles" in the game that are absolutely brutal. Puzzles are fine, but when they're so awful that you have to search online often, it just breaks immersion.

But it's fun because you have to think outside the box RIGHT!?!! RIGHT GUYS!!? YOU HAVE TO BE REALLY SMART TO BEAT THIS ONE GUYS!!
