"Play as the Joker" and "Prey in the Darkness" DLC tutorials! Now working on GOTY!
You can now use the "Play as the Joker" and "Prey in the Darkness" Challenge Map DLC with the Arkham Asylum GOTY v1.1

Special thanks to catspaw for his outstanding modding work and to Floobagop for researching and documenting the Mac version of the game.

Original thread: You CAN play as the Joker on PC!

With the release of Arkham Asylum GOTY with Steamworks, a lot of us were hoping that Rocksteady would take the time to provide us with the not-so-exclusive DLC that came with the Mac version, the PS3 version, and (partially) the Xbox 360 version. Yet again, we were left out. This would have been the perfect opportunity to show some love to the PC community, but alas, we were ignored. Some of us attempted to contact Rocksteady via e-mail, message, Facebook, and Twitter. Unfortunately, we were ignored.

Thankfully, a few dedicated modders have refused to give up. Thanks to the efforts originally by "Floobagop" and later by "catspaw," we now have the ability to play the complete version of Arkham Asylum on PC. This includes the "Play as the Joker" pack, which includes 8 challenge maps, and was released originally for PS3 and later for Mac. This also includes the "Prey in the Darkness" challenge maps that were released for EVERY OTHER PLATFORM besides PC. It sucks that the developers and publisher refuse to view the PC platform as equals, when in reality, the PC version of the game looks the best and received special treatment in the Physx department from NVIDIA and Rocksteady.

Anyway, the process of adding the DLC to you game involves acquiring some files that are exclusively found on the Mac version of the game. You can view Floobagop's original thread (You CAN play as the Joker on PC!) for detailed instruction on how to extract these files from a LEGAL Mac copy of the game. I will NOT share the files here, so don't ask. Find them yourselves.

The process mentioned in the thread above will allow you to use the DLC in the non-GOTY edition. Unfortunately, the GOTY has several packages of files that are modified from the non-GOTY edition, and Rocksteady intentionally disabled the configuration parameters that previously allowed this to work. A skilled modder called catspaw has dedicated several days of work to tracing down ways to enable the Joker content without the ability to do so in a configuration file. Once he discovered the solution to this, testing proved that several of the challenge map files that work with the non-GOTY edition would have to be modified so pointers that were included in the non-GOTY maps would now point to their new locations in the GOTY texture archives. Remarkably, catspaw figured all of this out on his own, and we owe him our gratitude.

These modified files can be found here.[mega.co.nz] They should be placed in the following locations in your installation directory:
  • Combat_Cave_Joker.umap -->BmGame\CookedPC\Maps\Challenge\
  • Combat_Cell_Joker.umap -->BmGame\CookedPC\Maps\Challenge\
  • Combat_Garden_Joker.umap -->BmGame\CookedPC\Maps\Challenge\
  • Combat_Max_Joker.umap -->BmGame\CookedPC\Maps\Challenge\
  • Predator_Admin_Joker.umap -->BmGame\CookedPC\Maps\Challenge\
  • Predator_Cave_Joker.umap -->BmGame\CookedPC\Maps\Challenge\
  • Predator_Max_Joker.umap -->BmGame\CookedPC\Maps\Challenge\
  • Predator_Med_Joker.umap -->BmGame\CookedPC\Maps\Challenge\
  • Death_Batman.umap -->BmGame\CookedPC\Maps\Frontend\Death\
  • Death_Cash.umap -->BmGame\CookedPC\Maps\Frontend\Death\

Finally, the EXE has to be modified using a HEX editor to internally set the Joker content flags to "enabled." Edit ShippingPC-BmGame.exe:
  • Go to offset 12153c6
  • Change the contents to 0D 00 00 08 00 89 86 80 06 00 00
  • Save the file.

Again, I will not supply any files besides the modded .umap files above. If you want them, you will need to purchase a legal copy of the game on Mac and extract them yourselves.

Enjoy playing the DLC on Steam, and shame on Rocksteady for making us resort to this!

Sweet! Looking forward to trying it once it finishes installing.

So, just to be sure, when you say buy a legal copy of the game on Mac, are there specific requirements about which Mac version? (PC has GOTY and standard editions, for example.) Does it matter whether it is a physical copy or digital?

Will this version include the required files?

20 dollars doesn't sound that terrible. 10 dollars for Joker (Robin and Nightwing are 7 in Arkham City) and 10 for the bonus maps (which were 5 or so in Arkham City?) So you're really only overpaying by 8 dollars, which anybody willing to go through all this work is probably not going to have a problem with.

I believe that version has the files you need and it shouldn't matter physical vs digital. You just need to get your hands on the files that were listed on the original "You CAN play as the Joker on PC" thread. And while I will not share the files here, there are plenty of people and places on the internet where you can find just the files you need, if you don't feel like buying an extra copy of the game. It's up to you, of course, how you want to handle that...

I'd love to do it legit, just don't want to pay money for a second copy of the game that I don't need only to find out I bought the wrong version lol.

It is very likely that you'll never play multiplayer Batman: AA again if you perform this mod.

Luckily, there is no multiplayer Arkham Asylum, and I can tell you that the game works just fine with Steam, even with the mod in place. You can still earn achievements, even.

If Rocksteady is not willing to take the time or effort to make the DLC available to everybody, which obviously works on PC, why shouldn't we be allowed to make it work ourselves.

And if Rocksteady ever chooses to release the DLC officially, it would be an instant purchase for me.

I had previously used this mod before migrating over to Steam and upgrading to GOTY edition, and now I no longer have access to the joker files (will have to go buy a new set). I can say that the old one worked perfectly, even, amazingly, the leaderboard. Yes, Games for Windows Live supported a leaderboard for content that was never released for PC. I made first place in a couple, though that wasn't saying much since there were so few names there.

No leaderboards in Steam though means nothing online about this game anymore.

It''s disappointing that Rocksteady didn't make this available to everyone. And unfortuntely for me I'm having trouble finding the files.

Hi there! I'm having a problem making this work. I have GOTY retail version and I already got the MAC files. I follow the instructions but when I run the game it always crashes before it even starts! Do I have to edit the exe file or is this step only for steam version? If this is not the problem then I don´t know how to proceed. Could anyone give me a step by step of this? Thank you very much!

I'm afraid that the steps supplied, as well as the edited maps, are for the Steam version only. Part of the reason for having to modify the map files is that textures are mapped differently for different builds of the game. Sorry, but you'll probably need a copy of the game on Steam to ensure that everything will work properly...

Thanks. My fave hex editor is HxD http://mh-nexus.de/en/hxd/

(later edit) Just tried it out. Works like a charm! Thanks so much! :D

What unlocks the Armored Suit for Challenges?
Gamephreak5 28 Feb, 2014 @ 11:53pm
Beating the game. I don't think it matters what difficulty, just as long as you beat the game at least once, the Armored Batsuit is unlocked to use for challenges.
