Its main purpose is helping in game and sharing game related advices and ideas with other players.
No one is being forced to drop items or help at bosses, everybody does it voluntarily.
Each game has its own magic. In this context, DS2 and the other games of the series are multiplayer games, search up the internet what a multiplayer game consists of.
You cannot know how many times a player has finished DS2 already, could be several times and they just wish to replay with a friend while enjoying their favorite weapon/armor but they don't want to finish half the game until they get it.
Let's not ruin the fun and cooperate, as I said before it's not a competition here, especially for an almost 10 year old game.
