Hans - Gretas brother (possible spoilers)

Does annnnyone know the story on Hans? The dialogue makes it seem like she couldn't save him but they didn't perish in the fire? I'm confused.

There is no story on Hans, other than what you see, but I think the implication is that the abuse he suffered at his parents' hands, or maybe the guilt of helping start the fire led to him taking his own life or, at least, he's in a messed up place mentally.
