when i try play story mode it crash

Have tried playing this game both on my PC with an xbox One controller and on Steam Deck with the SD controls. The standard control scheme is weird and bad, but every time I remap the controls they do not save. I start the story and the controls are just the default ones. Anyone know a way around this please? I really want to play through the game....
