How does the singleplayer measure up to Shandalar?
I've been itching to play more fun deckbuilding single-player campaigns for as long as I've been playing Shandalar from all the way back in the 90s, and it's really sad to see that the genre of card battlers has focused almost completely on online competition.

When I read that there are AI opponents to go up against it piqued my interest. How fun is the singleplayer mode? Is there more complexity to it than simply going from one opponent to the next?

I love Shandalar, played many times; I've yet to find one that plays similarly.
Is there a sense of progression or do you just play single duels with A.I.?

Just single duels with A.I.

I can't attest to how great the AI is or not. On Hard difficulty I've won a handful of times and lost a handful of times. I'm not familiar with all the rules for every expansion so still learning.

I'm not super good at the game, but I like the Hard AI. It gives me a decent challenge. Sometimes I win, sometimes I lose, so it's fun.

There is a Shandalar like game in EA. Unfortunately the actual card battles aren't fun at all for me. They are too simple for my taste and way less strategic compared to MtG. https://gtm.you1.cn/storesteam/app/1698850/Call_of_Zadeus_formerly_Mage_Tower/
