LIS as an open world game?
Imagine if Max is not limited to school. The player could pick up a bike and ride through town while he heard one of the songs from the game. Whenever you come to a new place, like a beach, it appeared a cutscenes of Max down from the bike and slowly walking on the hot sand. She could sit and contemplate nature hearing another beautiful song. The game would allow you to visit Chloe how many times wanted. In addition there would be time to sleep (as in Bully, a game from Rockstar), Max would need to shower and eat in the school cafeteria. Just like in The Sims, she can talk to the other students. Not that this is mandatory but would serve to relax the player and know more about her personality. To make a mission, just follow an icon located on the map and talk to a certain NPC.

How are LIS sales so far? Does anyone have the data?

yes this would be soo fantastic! ^^
Dontnod has no money in the past, but maybe now after LIS (it was on sale place 5 both on PS3 and PS4) maybe they have enough money to build "Life is Strange - Open World online" for a never ending gameplay (and a clothing shop and a Vortex Party on every weekend) ^^

It would be fantastic, i love to walk around, enjoy the view and sit down for a couple of minutes at the places where you can. Moneywise, this would be almost impossible and you could say its a "money waste" to do such a thing.

Well technically at least 11,000 - 12,000 Sales.

but Episode 1 was number 5 of the best selling games on the PSN store..

maybe they could do this without too much work, after episode 5 they have so many graphics, they just have to replace and animate the existing things and characters once in a while and I would be happy with it for years ^^ ..I envy the people of the future for watching their series like playing an open world game..

It should also have multiplayer, and at least 100 achievements, be ported to every console of the last 3 generations and be remade in an extra fat edition which you can buy later together with a shirt and a Lisa plush.

If I only was able to see flawlessness in ideas, not executions.

Yeah, I agree. That will be so awesome. In the 2nd episode I wanted to walk on the street but I couldn't. Plus, I want this and in Remember Me. But I don't know from the side of the devs. I hope we have good results, and to see this happens. ^^

While we are at it, lets imagine that the game never ends, never gets old or stale and every episode gets better than before! Yay super happy fun threads! Just imagine how much even better we'll imagine the game tomorrow?

Not their focus, and a fully-functional worldspace (what we see right now are setpieces that define an intended region of interaction) can be very costly. The developers will have to add in vehicle scripts, pedestrian animations/behaviors, more licensed music, a proper physics setup tailored for this game, and more - all for a feature that's hardly important for an episodic game focused on narrative.
Only as fan-made game in distant future. Imagine full Bot/Ai siulated character with Max in open world and free rewind/focus ;D
Admittedly LIS True Colors already sort of did this, with having one primary level that is open in which you can go to wherever.

I don't really care either way. I mean it's pseudo open world versus open world, and LIS worlds are typically not these massive planet sized worlds.

I also feel like having the player do too many things would just distract from the story at hand. It's not like in Bully in which, well, you have to roleplay the character as a bully and so you have to have that experience.
