This solved the issue for a journalist that also got a problem with the steam installer.
If it crashes once you get to the main screen it's because XNA apparently is depending on windows media player. So then install that.
We rolled out a new update today that includes a launcher that tries to detect if any redists are missing. Sadly we have no idea what redists you have in your _CommonRedist Folder but Temporality requires the 4 redists above. Hopefully the new launcher will detect if you are missing any and prompt you for where to install.
If it is an issue with the graphichs card we now have a new pipeline in place that tries searching for an acceptable setup and failing to find any will shut down gracefully. We hope it's not this because if it is then there is nothing we can do about it due to it being a part of XNA.
But my guess is that your common redist folder didn't include all the redists required by Temporlity like perhaps .net4.0 client profile And hopefully the launcher will detect it for you. Else please try the redist we entered above (not from your computer from the sites) And hopefully we should be able to resolve this because it shoulden't be possible to get a silent error any longer.
There are like 2 out of 200 or 300 games not working on my PC and this is one of those.
The new update did the trick. It started directly after I read your answer. There was no need of reinstalling those redist packages. Thanks man! I'll clone myself a few times now. ;)
Just for curiosity do you get music or is music OFF in the options menu ? (trying to determine if it might have been a windows media player issue)
I need more info to be able to help you. What verision are you running, are you running through the launcher ? When does it shut down, Do you get any error messages and in that case which ones ?
What is your computer setup (graphichs card, memory,Operation system). We would love to help you but we need more info. The newest patch should supply plenty of Info for all cases we know about.
Launching the game through Steam, both normal Play and Troubleshooting mode result in the same thing: black screen for a second, then back to desktop. No error message, no app or process running in task manager.
Directly double-clicking the exe does nothing at all.
Funny thing is, the game launched perfectly well prior to the patch...
Have you tried turning of SLI ? The only thing thats changed in startup is that the game tries to recover if it fails to set an apropriate graphics mode. so it shoulden't crash in any situation that used to work.
But XNA is known to have issues with SLI it seems. I just added a new option called Force Windows Mode try that one please. If it works it will help alot in trouble shooting your issues. We will probabely have to send you a special build for error tracking too later on.
After switching the output device to my headset I was able to start and play the game without any other interfering.
Anyway were gonna do our best to track this down so we have created a special test build for you who are having trouble (it wont really be playable due to creating a HUGE debug file that will help us track down the problems)
To start using the test build you have to select it instead of the normal build and you do it as described below.
Right click on the game. select properties. Then select Beta
as password input
temporalitytest
then select the test branch in the pulldown above.
This is an extremely instrumented build of the game (or well of a newer unreleased verision but that won't matter for this) after running it you will find a file named TemporalityLog.txt in your Documents(or myDocuments) folder.
Please send it to info@defrostgames.com together with your steam name and we will see exactely where the game shut down.
(might require a restart by steam sometimes but shoulden't)
If the file is missing it means that our code is never reached and it's either that one of the redists is still missing (unlikely but possible if you have run the troubleshooting mode before) or that there is some incompatibility with your hardware/Software setup that forces XNA to shut down during initsialisation in which case we can do nothing and would recommend you approach valve for a refund (after testing installing all the redists one more time just in case) The launcher was our attempt at detecting those scenarios but it might not be perfect. We obviosuly hope no one will come to the case of it being an XNA failure.
