What does it mean? You can't enter combat mode? That may be a bug.
Otherwise, if you don't manage to backstab bandits without being caught, you may want to rethink your strategy.
If I remember correctly, the brothel is weird because most things have the steal icon until you destroy the gang of bandits, then it becomes fair picking. Is that what you mean by it being alerted as thief?

I'll back up a bit as I was in the heat of the moment last (night) earlier morning.

So I went to the Brothel, as that was the only place that wasn't being shelled or I had been to.
I brought Pavle, speedy+12 space. My scouting run with Katia brought back knowledge that I needed to go up to the 3rd level and get a sawblade. (Katie, sidenote, cleared basically the left side of the map of loot bar 1 or 2 wood stacks. I keep a "hand" pile near the entrance so I can store all my loot in there at the end of a nights looting then pick what I need that night etc etc)...
Pavle was equipped with a helmet, a hatchet and a sawblade.
I went straight up to level 3 of the building and cut through the bar. No one was below in the kitchen. However, across the room I just sawbladed into, was a barred door and behind that door a white-top man was standing.
From the notes they say cautioned advised so I thought this must be the thugs. (also kept hearing screams? so probably doing something dodgy givien the name too).
So I made a bunch of noise and hid in the hiding place which is also in that room.
The guy first went downstairs (he's not very bright) to the kitchen. But I thought thats cool, I'll just un-bar the barred door. So I did this.
He did hear this and started to go back up the stairs.
I am not sure he saw me here. But I hid in the hiding place in the room I got into by the sawblade.
He walked in (white top man) and stood just in front of the hiding spot.
Now usually it gives you a knife icon on their body to sneaky "off" them.
This time it didn't.
So I waited for him to leave. Mildly annoyed that the icon didn't appear. But hey ho lets try again.

So waited for the dumb white top guy to go downstairs.
And I made a noise again, this time running on the landing.
At which point some other dude came out of a door on the east end and shouted "thief"
I haven't stole anything by the way at this point (nor do I).
I was like "what?" but then ran when he got a shotgun out.
I ran to the hiding spot. I thought now they "must" allow me to bonk him from behind.
But he came into the room and no, again, no icon.
However, my character did move out of his hiding spot.
At which point I was shot by the mad shotgun guy.
However, I slashed him and killed him.
Then, his mates came and put about 6 bullets in me.
Pavle died.
I then wrote this and shut down the computer haha.

It was like 30 days in....and I don't think that was my fault other than the running at them slashing them at the end. Probably should have just ran at that point.

The weird part is the backstab icon not appearing. Were you in combat mode? You can hide even if you're not. You need to click on the weapon (left of screen) to activate combat mode, but it will be also triggered when you take damage.

Yes I think that was it. I have been playing again today and now seen the two modes on my left screen. Thank you for your help.
