Question about black hole visibility.
I've been an on and off casual player for a few years, this is my longest run with the game, now, and I recently finished my first expedition on this save. The Beachhead/Normandy reward one.

In all of my researching I've seen that you need to complete the main story stuff in order to see black holes on the galaxy map. I only just started focusing on the Artemis/Atlas quests but I've been able to see black holes on the galaxy map for a while now. Since pretty early on in my expedition, IIRC. I don't remember what I did in the expedition when I realized I could see them.

I assumed things had changed or been adjusted on when they become visible, but everything I'm still reading, even from within the last year, still talk about having to finish the main quest line to be able to see that. The only thing I can think of is that something in the expedition unlocked them for me. Just looking for some clarification on if this was some intentional design or if my save bugged or something.

Afaik, black holes will appear in the galaxy map once you speak to Polo about them

This and, in one expedition, there was a piece of tech in our freighters that did the same thing. If you still have that tech, you'll always see them.

Completing the Atlas path is the way to unlock that ability if you don't want to talk to Polo to find Black Holes. One of the rewards for completing that path is that black holes will show up on the galaxy map for you. Note, the Atlas path is NOT the main story path, that's the Artemis path.

Worth pointing out that according to the Omega update patch notes you should just have that ability in the first place, but I have not noticed that to be true on any of my expedition starts. I can see them just fine on my main playthrough where I have the Atlas path completed, though.

Sounds like for you the Omega update might have finally kicked in and allowed you to see them without completing Atlas? This is the bit in the omega update notes I'm referring to:
Black Holes are now always available on the Galaxy Map without having to specifically request coordinates from Specialist Polo.

No such technology exists. You're probably thinking of the Singularity Engine, which actualy creates blackholes. It does not, however, allow you to just 'see' existing ones. Completing the Atlas path is the way to get that ability.
Whether you ask about black holes or not, all become visible on the map after visiting the anomaly.

Are you sure about that?
I haven't started a new game in a while now, but when I ran through the current expo, I visited the Anomaly several times and they didn't appear. After I spoke to Polo they became visible...

I started a new game recently, using the tutorial. I spoke to Polo about Artemis, not the black hole. All black holes were visible as I was triangulating for Artemis' position. So, maybe you need to interact with Polo, but specifically asking about black holes is not necessary.

I've been trying to figure out how to activate the function without doing the Atlas path since the Omega update indicated it should be possible. This sounds as good as any other theory. I'm going to make sure to try that in the next expedition I run.

I can vouch for this.
I have 2 current saves started with 5.12 (1 normal and 1 max difficulty) both with tutorial on. Neither have done Artemis path (sitting at "Alone Amidst the Stars - Artemis, the Explorer") or Atlas path (still shows "The Dust of Creation"). The Space Anomaly is at "Beyond the System?" so I've talked to all the inhabitants.
Can see nearby black holes on the galactic map in both files.

This perhaps seems the most likely thing to me. I was wondering because I didn't care at all about black holes and had never asked Polo about them because I had no interest in messing with them, yet. But thinking back, I did put off going to the Anomaly for a while (no reason, just didn't feel the need to go) until I remembered I could double up on exo-suit slot upgrades at the anomaly and started going there. And I think it was around that time that they started showing up on the galaxy map despite not asking Polo about them.
