can someone explain fishing?
I genuinely have no idea how this is supposed to work. i've tried "pulling against the fish" using both my mouse and wasd yet neither seems to actually do anything?
At what point do i reel in?

I hate fishing in videogames with a passion. it's one of the most overrated and often boring features in gaming. I understand somehow many people like it though so the fact it exists is fine, but i hate engaging with it.

The only reason im even bothering is because i heard flathill fishing gives [redacted] drops as [redacted] are very hard to kill and also exceedingly rare to find given the rarity of fog events.

But even so i've tried for about 15 minutes now and i've caught nothing. can someone explain how please? (or even better add a passive fish catching device, or even an autofish accessibility option so i can do something else because fishing is a miserable chore in real life never-mind in video-games where you are forced to pay active attention due to the ridiculously fast rate of interaction.)

Cast line, with left click, or right trigger, wait for the fish to bite, i.e. the line will pull taught, and then click again and hold until fish is 'reeled in'. hope that helps.
making simple bait with carbon will also help, there are other baits if you wish to investigate that further..

When i cast the line into water about 50% of the time it ends up in a weird spot just below the bottom of my field of view, making it really hard to see the direction and movement state of the bobber :/

I physically cannot move my camera while fishing. this ♥♥♥♥ sucks

You don't actually have to see the bobber, all you need to do is see the line go taut and turn a bright green. That's when you want to press and hold left button to reel the catch in. You can't move while fishing, but you should be able to look around.

P.S. There is an Automated Trap that you can get the plans for at the Anamoly. :steamhappy:

When the line becomes green, just click the left mouse button and keep it pressed. No need to move the mouse :).
Ignore the bobber, it is a distraction. Focus on the color of the line. When it turns green, click and hold to catch the fish (or other stuff).

Alternately, change the difficulty setting for fishing to Automated (Fully Automated??). Using that difficulty setting, you just cast and wait for the "you caught a fish" popup.
Another alternative is to get the automated fishing buoy in the Anomaly. You just place it and go on about your business and come back later and get your fish. (Put down a base computer nearby at the very least so you can easily return)

I am not sure if those can be baited but they work. Used them in the fishing expedition for a couple of the required goals.

AdventureQuest 3D and WoW fishing was a lot of fun. I like it less here for a few reasons.

It's not really engaging in NMS and I've already sent an "Potential improvement" idea to NMS before on this.

Basically, you wait till the line goes green and press a button. It's all RNG from there. You can look up the baits and effects so you can maximize what you are trying to catch.

moving the rod around is purely for visual flare, it has no mechanical function...
And I agree, fishing tends to be one of the least engaging features in games (the only example I remember ever actually enjoying was in Zelda - Ocarina of Time)

:steamthis: this.
As long as you can see the fishing line, then all you need to do is wait for it to turn green and go taught... then hold the reel button.
I find it best to have a snack or watch something while you do this as it's not engaging enough on it's own...

They don't require bait, and they do count towards missions.
The only downside I'm aware of is that they don't count as being caught in your wonders (ie, they have no size record)
If you want more than 3, you can use the wire glitch to place as many as you want at a base.

I would guess in the OPTIONS menu.
Basically, there's a setting where you only have to click instead of HOLD to reel in a fish.

I came to suggest you are in the wrong game discussion... but then I see we have managed to already come to that conclusion.

The NMS option is described here:

In the game options the fishing difficulty setting can be automated to collect a biting fishing. So there is no need to wait for the line to go green and click. It does not automate the casting of the line. But you can go AFK and make a hot drink or sandwich : )

If you want complete automation and go off to do something else or another mission, build the three fishing baskets and return later to collect the fish.
