Half-Life Before is a basic mod, what else ? The level design is very inconsistent and make me quit the game very soon. Only for die hard HL fans.

considering its free, I cannot say its fully a waste of time.
yes the story makes no sense and the game is a bit jank, sometimes having no idea what to do at some points and the majority of puzzles are literally the same and only stop the action packed mod this should have been.

However, I loved the half-life: echos-esk horror section, but believe it should have been longer. The changes to the pistol weapon model and animations are amazing, but I don't understand why that wasn't done for the other weapons.

Overall, if you have around 30 minutes of spare time, I would recommend.
