Interpolation is a technology which smooths movements of objects in the game (e.g. players). Essentially what interpolation is doing, is smoothing out the movement of an object moving between two known points. The interpolation delay is typically equal to 2 ticks, but can vary.
For example, if a player is running in a straight line, and at the time of "Tick 1" they were at 0.5m, and at "Tick 2" they were at 1m, the interpolation feature, would make it appear on the client, as if they moved smoothly from 0.5m to 1m away from their starting location. The server however, only ever really "sees" the player at those two locations, never in between them. Without interpolation, games would appear very choppy, as the client would only see objects in the game move whenever they received an update from the server. Interpolation occurs exclusively on the client side.
Interpolation essentially slows the rate at which the entire game is being rendered to your computer, by a value of time typically equal to 2 ticks (however some games allow you to tweak this, like CSGO) This is what people are talking about when they refer to their "rates". They mean Update Rate, and Interpolation delay. CSGO for example has a default interpolation period of 100ms. correction: CSGO uses 2x the update rate, or 31ms if update rate is 64Hz, 100ms is the default for cs source I think.
(Extrapolation)
This is another client-side technique that can be used to compensate for lag. Essentially the client extrapolates the position of objects rather than delaying the entire client render. This method is generally inferior to Interpolation, especially for FPS games since players movements are not predictable.
It is widely known that since the 1.41 update, hit detection went to shet. I played every single version since launch and can confirm this. Update 1.50 and 1.51 sadly didn't improve the matter much, and after that Dice went to work on newer entries and left it in this half broken state. If you have the time, try finding the 1.0 version on disc and you will see that it was almost perfect. Now you just need to get used to it. Don't shoot and move, always try to crouch or go prone, pls don't jump around or dolphin dive as that is the most cancerous behaviour possible in BF2, as it basicaly shows who the real scum is and abuses this crap. Good luck and see you on the battlefield soldier. Cheers
I think i read somewhere that the amount of work to fix that was too much and not worth it. It is a tangled mess when it comes to the code since it is done in Refractor. An amazing engine, no doubt about it, but the issue is tied to multiple things( animations, physics, hit boxes, net code with the interpolation and extrapolation issues). I think they simply decided to not make that mistake again and just move onto BF 2142. Just my guess tho, we will probably never know. The grenade spam on Karkand is legendary. Not in a good way, but still kinda nostalgic and i like it that way ;). I also fully agree with your last statement. BF2 can be considered one of the best if not the best Battlefield games we ever got from the old DICE before EA pushed them into what we have today. The game is bloody briliant even with all the bugs and exploits. Just to name a few good things: It uses the Refractor engine as mentioned above, incredible engine for its time, optimised to run even on a potato and still looks gorgeus even today, one of the last Battlefield games exclusively made for PCs and it shows. We have the Battlerecorder for those awesome montages, something we have never seen again and of course... DEDICATED SERVERS. Because of that we are still here talking about and playing it 15 years later :). Wish you a nice day. Cheers
But even after all this, It still holds a special place in our harts as one of the greatest shooter games ever that will never be again.
I would ♥♥♥♥ bricks for 2142 with a BF:Bad company(toned down a bit) destruction system... AND NO DRONE/ESCAPEPOD SURFING!!... Yea that would be great.
But here's how you do it... But don't... here's a tutorial on how. But dont do it....

DONT DOOOOO IIIIIIIIT!
I WISH they would just put out a bad company 3 in the same style as 2. All I want is Bad Company 2 with updated graphics. I'd be the happiest SOD on the northern hemisphere.
