If you've been looking to start Laras and Tomb Raider series journey from the beginning, the 5th generation era, this is the best way to start. These games are the definitive versions and there's no reason to go back or even try the originals.

If you've played the future titles, well these play nothing like em aside from Anniversary. Each TR trilogy stands out on their own stylistically and by design. The Survivor trilogy(10-12) were 3rd person shooter adventure platformers with the last one bringing back the emphasis on the puzzle subgenre like it used to be.

The Legend Trilogy(Legend, Anniversary and Underworld) were action platformers. And were the biggest deviations of the franchise, abandoning puzzles almost completely and doing away with exploration for a more linear design. With the exception of Anniversary that perfectly blended the old style with the Legends engine and movements, and going back to being puzzle platformers with less focus on gunplay.

The OG Trilogy and The Darkness Trilogy(4-6) are strictly action puzzle platformers(the exception of part 1 which is only a puzzle platformer with some minor gunplay).

Imo if you're gonna buy this you have to really enjoy puzzles and brutally difficult platforming. There's hardly no narrative in part 1, the sequels start to add a stronger emphasis on story with part 3 being the most narrative heavy of the 3. The games are very slow paced for the most part.

Why play these? Because you like to think and figure things out, this is not the kind of game you can enjoy by using a guide, because figuring things out is all these games have going for them, unlike many games were you can still enjoy things like the action, AI difficulty, the narrative etc, TR just boils down to using your brain, if you take that away with a guide, you get only shooting segments that barely exist and aren't super engaging, platforming that poses no challenge because most of the platforming difficulty comes not just from the jumps but where to jump to and where to jump from, which is a puzzle itself in the games.

For 29.99 you're getting more than what you paid for, the games have new graphics, have a crap ton of content, the most content these versions have ever seen. From all the new outfits, 3 dlc chapters(1 for each game), tons of secrets to uncover, two different playstyles, essentially 6 games because it brings two versions of each, so you can play with the OG controls and OG graphics. The games without dlc will easily last up to 50 hours or more. Imo these games should've been 39.99 with how well made they are and how much you get from it and they actually get updates, like gameplay improvements and other neat things. Which makes these remasters even better.

Tomb Raider Remastered Trilogy imo is not suited for long hours of play, it is best played in parts(which makes the fact the progression is divided by chapters even better). So if you're looking for something that takes some thinking and can kill a quick hour or two, these games are for you.

Edit: After seeing this mentioned enough about the controls and lighting, I gotta chime in and hard disagree. The issues being mentioned about the controls with ledge drop grabbing, back jumping, and positioning yourself are misleading. The modern controls are way superior to the tank controls, there's never any need to switch to tank for any segment of the games. I strongly believe the issues you are reading are actually the fault of the players and not the modern controls, I say this because during my first two hours of the game I did have those issues, but you than hopefully realize you're doing something wrong like I did and adjusted, and it goes away, and I have never had to switch to tank controls for anything since. When I did try em to experiment too see if it did make it easier, they didn't, modern was easier and faster. I played a whole chapter with both control styles and I had a easier time with modern, and I completed the chapter 26 mins faster than my tank control run, simply because modern requires way less repositioning and walking.

Aside from the first two hours I have never missed a ledge drop grab, you simply hold right trigger and run and she auto drops and grabs, if it didn't work, you did something wrong and it most likely has to do with when and hold long you're pressing R I believe. The problem with positioning on single square platforms with modern controls that is being mentioned absolutely exists with tank controls too, which is something they fail to mention when they talk about the flaw with modern, you're not actually making it easier you're just swapping one problem with the other, so it really just comes down to preference, but they are passing it as objective criticism but I do think they may fail to notice the subjectiveness of their critic. Sometimes with tank controls you'll have an issue jumping off small platforms onto other small platforms that are really far and also but especially diagonally positioned, and worsened when they have different elevation. You'll have to essentially measure the jump(reposition) and than try and make it. Guess what? Thats the same issue that still exists in modern, albeit differently and way less cumbersome. In modern you'll have these weird jumps where either Lara will simply fall off or you'll jump poorly positioned, the walk button in these scenarios is your friend, by simply always holding the walk button when you land on small platforms you'll mitigate this. There will still be moments where you might have to reposition yourself and it can be frustrating, but the problems persists in tanks, but instead of having to constantly realign yourself and walk reverse, with modern you're just quickly spinning around twice with the walk button held preventing ledge falls.

Now the issue with backflipping(back jumps). I have yet to encounter a scenario that required me to switch to tank to use backflipping(something that is gone in modern). Now i'm not gonna fault the players entirely because I don't think the game mentioned this but you simply gotta hold the 360 button and she will be able to make all the backflip jumps without the need for tanks. But regardless this is a non-issue that the players seem to not know there's a solution for. There's no need for side jumps that i'm aware of yet.

Lastly the lighting. So the lighting is different in modern graphics, so some areas are way darker than the OG versions, dark to the point where you can't always make out small items you need. Does switching to OG graphics during these moments make it better? Yes. So would turning up the brightness.(I know i'm being a smart-butt but hear me out) I'm being smart because the issue 100% exists with OG graphics too. There will be moments with OG graphics where an area is too dark and you can't make out important items, so you'll have to switch to modern graphics to see better. So it's very much misleading when they complain about the lighting in modern, and mention the need to switch to OG, as if the issue doesn't exist with OG graphics too, they make it out to be a con, when really it's just neutral. The lighting in the game is just problematic by design and has nothing to do with the graphical selection.

The criticisms are misleading as they fail to mention the equal shortcomings of both OG and modern controls and graphics, while not being aware of the existing solutions to certain problems. On a better note maybe I hope with the next remasters, they make some quality of life improvements to the speed in which you shimmy on ledges and move blocks, it's just too slow. And also add a real target switch feature, changing aim is a drag.

Looks great. Press F1 to turn the graphics on or off like, the higher contrast shows off some things more clearly like a door hidden in the shadow. There is no auto save at level checkpoints only manual save at any time through out, but it does save to the Steam cloud.

Simply, thank you Aspyr. After the last butchering of this IP with the 3 survival games (That we don't talk about), I had lost hope. Looks beautiful, Modern controls, I couldn't ask for anything else!

aspyr and Sabre Interactive (who have been removed from the pysical release box), have done wonders with this remaster collection. As someone who grew up with the original games they hold a special place in my heart. I have played the originals do death on all platforms and i have equally played these remasters on PS4/5, Xbox and now Steam (around 700 hours in total on the remastered collection). They are a must buy for any gamer especially if you have played the original versions.

If you are on the fence about the games, i suggest you try out both control schemes, I use tank controls (which is what the games are built to use), i can't use the modern controls very well, but for someone who is new to the game maybe it will work better for you than the original tank controls.

The graphics are beautiful and bring life to the old games, the new control layout across all 3 games fits perfectly, no longer a different scheme between the first 3 games (you cant sprint and crouch in TR1 and TR2) but it allows you to hop between each game and know exactly how to control Lara!

The 3 games have all their expansions, which alone makes the purchase worth it!

Good remaster, I spent more time on these games than I had expected. Tomb Raider 3 is going to make you cry...
