When I played the game, it felt like a fling to me and that Jimmy just didn't want to add fatherhood to his plate of challenges in life.

When I read people suggesting sexual assault, I get it. Could have been it. But that's not how I interpreted it initially. Ultimately Jimmy is an a-hole with an ego problem. I've seen Jimmy in plenty of work scenarios, but not as far gone mentally as in Mouthwashing. It was amazing to see the events of the story unfold and realize Curley's not the bad guy?

Jimmy is inept and proud. My only question is why did he crash the ship into the asteroids? Was he just trying to get back at the employer who let them go? Was he trying to end his responsibility as a father somehow? Was he really just inept and crashed it because he sucks at everything like Daisuke?

Also, I thought it was a really cool detail when Curly mentioned how many days were left on the haul, Anya knew exactly how many months that was because she was thinking about her pregnancy already.

Now that I am thinking of it, Anya may have been nauseous this whole time as a side effect of being pregnant, not because she is a terrible nurse.

For real, at that point she hadn't even told Jimmy she was pregnant, there would be no reason for her to be so scared and determined if it was just a fling. That was one of the bigger indicators for me. And then it turns out she was right to hide the gun from him, even if it didn't work out in the end.

Yeah this makes sense but the locks being referenced is also a reference to her locking herself in as Curly says the locks on medical are for "Safety" but the locks were ultimately what lead to Anya and Daisuke dying (as they couldn't go in to stop her from killing herself and he had to get in the other way and got hurt)

I always interpreted Jimmy feeling no remorse towards the preganancy and Anya's death because he simply only saw it as a nuisance, and he interpreted his and Anya's relationship as mutual.

Yet Anya could definitely have just felt pressured, threatened or guilty and let him do what he wants. A lot of rapists don't realize they've raped somebody. Because victims are too scared to ever say it.

Anya expresses a lot of fear and timidness around Jimmy, when we play as Jimmy we always find her either in the company of somebody else, or curled up in a ball. When we play as Curly, she's relaxed, able to sit by herself and have stable conversations. When she mentions the locks on the cockpit and not the sleeping quarters, the word safety flashes before our eyes, hinting that Anya did not feel safe.

I was also surprised when I completed the game and looked at disccussions and seeing this assumed as fact, when I didn't get that feeling at all - all of the guilt signifiers from Jimmy I interpretted as being specifically regarding the pregnancy, rather than it meaning anything darker than that. I also assumed it was telling a story of Jimmy seeing the pregnancy as a 'nuiscance' as casualghost says.

All of the above details are illuminating and I buy into it now - Anya wanting to hide the gun makes so much more sense now.

If he sees the pregnancy only as being something that would get in the way of his career... His conversation with Curly doesn't totally make sense - why would Jimmy be worried about coming back to earth? He WOULD be worried and would have motive to just kill everyone if he thought he would be standing trial when he gets back.

With that in mind, one detail I'll add that I think supports this is the pill feeding scenes. The fade to black, and the voice acting being so uncomfortable - you understand that the pills are being forced down. It's unclear that Curly even wants to be kept alive/sedated since he has no voice - maybe Jimmy is only sedating him so he won't be able to speak (He is fixated on stopping him from making noise - his voice being amplified from Jimmy's perspective reminds me of The Telltale Heart)

This fits in if you consider the pill feeding as a parallel for SA. Anya isn't comfortable with it, despite being the medic, and Jimmy seems to think little of forcing pills (and later mouthwash) down someone's throat.
Manipulating Curly's body so he can swallow his own leg....also feels very evocative.

I'm also now seeing the horse fetus scene as being a signifier that, in Jimmy's mind, it's conception isn't natural in some way. This fits in nicely too.

Jimmy likely roofied Anya. Given his being comfortable about knocking Swansea out with spiked alcohol. He's definitely an irredeemable POS. Love the discussions that this game has generated.

eh. theres a lot of little, nuanced details that suggest she was assaulted. not a lot in this game is super cut and dry, especially with the emphasis on Jimmys mental breakdown........breakdowns?.....his mental journey through the story.

someone pointed out the differences between her stances and dialogue when youre playing as Jimmy, vs playing as Curly. im not super comfortable ignoring that after noticing it.

Anya states that she knows Curly won't let her keep the gun to "protect" herself, and instead settles on hiding it somewhere that Jimmy won't find it.
Why would she need protection from a guy she just had a regular old fling with? Why would she need to worry about what might happen if he had a gun? Why would she OD on painkillers over all of it?
On top of that, why would Curly have such a visceral reaction to all of it? He immediately panics and goes into denial, trying to convince both Anya and himself that Jimmy couldn't possibly be such a terrible person. That's not something you do just because your employees got bored and one of them happened to be bad at pulling out.

This game and its response serves as a really good example of why rape victims don't step forward, because Anya can straight up say "I don't feel safe around him" and "I know you wouldn't give me the gun to protect myself" and ask why the crew quarters don't have locks, and y'all can somehow rationalize it as "oh they just had a fling and then regret it."

I hope none of the women in your lives ever trust y'all with coming forward about their own experiences.

Being slightly uncharitable, that's kind of the problem the game's narrative is addressing. Curly does the same, not wanting to think the worst of Jimmy, but the result is him ignoring Jimmy hurting Anya. The desire to not think the worst of your bro, your pal, your buddy, is the desire to ignore or disbelieve his victims because it's inconvenient.

If there's anything to take from this game it's that you almost certainly know an Anya in your life, and you want to make sure you aren't unintentionally covering for her Jimmy.
