I guess it's normal to not get anything for the small spiders. I really don't know (it's been a looong time ).
Teslas can be very effective, if you have the time/gold to get them. But you'll need something else to handle the enemies until you can get the tesla(s), and, in this case, I can't tell you what that might be.
You have a few options:
If you don't already have all of the upgrades (for the meteor, reinforcements, etc.), you could do the Heroic and/or Iron modes on some earlier maps to get more stars. Having all of the upgrades didn't help me, but it might help you.
You could try different heroes. I was using Elora Wintersong (she was just my go-to for most maps), but there may be better choices for that map.
If you haven't already, you could lower the difficulty (my attempts just now were on Normal).
Last, but not least, they originally kept the old version of the game here on Steam. As far as I know, it's still available. Right-click on the game in Steam, select Properties and the Betas tab, and see if there is a "legacy" option (as I recall, that's what they called it). Selecting that will presumably replace the newer version with that old one (as opposed to having both versions installed at the same time).
For Fungal Forest you can either use Ignus because he kills all the small enemies very quickly and heals himself constantly, or you can use Gerald LIghtseeker to make the boss a non-issue(he can just block Myconid until it dies).
The Tainted Treants have high armour, so it helps to get a few Sorcerer Mage towers to destroy their armour. I also find it useful to have one or two Rangers Hideouts placed in strategic places with the Wrath of the Forest upgrade, because that freezes the enemies in place to both slow them down and to stop them from damaging your units for a while.
As for artillery, both can work, but that is not the main priority; the main priority is to stop your soldiers from dying. I don't know if you know this, but whenever one of your units dies, it will spawn a Husk from one of the poison pools, and this is what will eventually overwhelm your blockers(also, when an Earth Elemental from the Sorcerer Mage dies, it will spawn a Swamp Thing).
Good catch. I thought about that, but then for some reason I was thinking that it only happened on Rotten Forest, not Fungal Forest.
As you said, if you're using any "troops" (regular or elemental), you need to really focus on keeping them alive, or you're just creating more enemies for yourself.
Yeah, they obviously changed some things, but I've never seen anything from them about it. Their very brief notes in the Beta section don't mention anything like that. For all I know, it wasn't even intentional (although if it wasn't, they hopefully would have reversed those changes).
As mentioned in my earlier post, there is the "legacy" option if you want to just go back to the old version.
If it gets too frustrating/annoying, you can use the "legacy" option that I mentioned to switch to the old version. I'm guessing that you would have to start over, but it might be worth it.
