The game is now in a state that is night and day different from the early closed alphas. Don't listen to all the mindless doomers that spread misinformation. When it goes free to play, play the game and form an opinion on the current product. I see the game only getting better in the months to come and feel pretty confident if anyone plays this game with an open mind they will enjoy it.

Smite 2 is the sequel to the MOBA Smite, now with better graphics, overhauls to gameplay, and adding more Gods to play into the game. Rather than being limited by the old engine of Unreal Engine 3 it uses Unreal Engine 5, making it more beautiful on the screen and giving the game more room for depth and development.

As a MOBA, it does the job of offering the classic 5 vs 5 experience with lanes in its Conquest mode, yet for all the great stuff Smite 2 is doing on a technical level, the game feels to me to be very lackluster and barebones. Gone are the music themes you could put on your loadout along with many details like animations for recall or global emotes. Old Gods need to be imported back into the game and it will probably take a long while for Smite 2 to be as complete as the first game was.

I had fun with the game in the matches I played, when everything worked correctly that is. Despite many years in the market with the first entry, Smite 2 still suffers from all the pains that a MOBA usually offers. There are AFK teammates, and unbalanced Gods that can domain the battlefield and matches can go for so long that people stop caring when the clock says that more than 45 minutes have passed since it started.

Is frustrating to see the genre be stuck in the mud for so long and not have quality-of-life fixes, perhaps make bots take control of characters when an AFK player presents itself (or rather leaves haha!) or put extra effort into making every character be viable to some degree. Another point is, that I love aesthetics in games and Smite 2 sorely lacks them. There are only a few skins in the game, and most of those skins are overpriced for a title that is clearly in its infancy.

No, not at all. As a returning player, you only get a nice "discount" of 50% to new skins if you have enough legacy gems and it is CAPPED to that 50%, meaning no, you CANNOT get new skins for free if you spent a bunch of money in the first game (aww that sucks~). There is absolutely no benefit to buying the game and is better to just wait until it becomes free to play completely but even then, you still have a bone of a game that feels incomplete in so many aspects. I know is early access, but even this early access feels like it should be a private alpha testing.

My recommendation is to wait for maybe another year unless you want to jump into the game now. Wait until the load-outs come back, the skins are better and priced more fairly (good luck with that one) and have a better balance with all game modes. Ultimately Smite 2 is not a game that I consider fun but rather frustrating and boring, at least until more progress is made in its development. Ultimately why would you play Smite 2, when at the moment, Smite 1 is so much better? It has all the features and all the Gods you could want and will remain so for a long while.

If you consider your time or money precious don't waste them in this game, but it will pass the time if you have nothing better to do.

Smite 2 in its current state is a decent game going into the open beta. Hi Rez made a mistake of releasing access too early to the genral public, even though it was a closed alpha it was not communicated well what that actually meant for players. At that point it was not in a playable state but they have made many strides since then.

This update has been a long time coming but it has unfortunately caused many issues with moving to a new engine after developing smite 1 for so long. They should have started working on this earlier instead of chasing trends and trying to break into mobile games from 2016 to 2021. If this was made in 2020 with the access to cross gen skins at the time there would have likely been significantly less backlash.

The real last thing that needs to be sorted out is their monitization system which can make or break this. They made the mistake of realeasing Joki Loki as one of their first "classic" skins in smite 2. They are giving legacy gems back in lieu of migrating skins which would be impractical for them. The only problem is that they are slightly more expensive than the old skins would have been so it isnt a 1:1 conversion. I hope they update this once the economy and skins are restarted on open beta launch. One of the standout things Hi Rez has done with Smite is having pretty transparent microtransaction systems and I hope that carries through to Smite 2.

I have spent a lot of time on smite 1 and have played a lot of 2 already and hope it succeeds. Many people dont seem to understand that this game needed to happen. Smite 1 was too old and was unsustainable for development, and also developers cant be expected to waste their careers on developing on an almost 20 year old platform. If smite 1 development would continue I wouldnt be suprised if most of the developers quit as it would be career ending to not keep up with the current engines and software. It isnt a battle between smite 1 vs smite 2. It is a battle between smite 2 vs bankruptcy and lack of legacy talent. Many people seem to believe they can make smite 2 fail because they dont want smite 1 to be abandoned but unfortunately that isnt an option at this point. It is success for smite 2 or no smite at all. Which at the end of the day would be fine but I would also like to continue playing this game for the foreseeable future.
