Better than Pentiment ?
I love Obsidian's games and I think Pentiment was inspired by this game, but Pentiment does not come close to this in terms of overall game quality. And it's ironic that this game is less popular than Pentiment. As those who play both games, do you think so too?

Yeah, Pentiment is good, but this one here is far better.

Pillars is better but I prefer Pentiment.
For me, real life sucks because people usually hide what they feel, think or do, and Pillars are more tied to real life than Pentiment, even some choices in Pillars piss me off more and make me think: "why that? Ah ok, it is related to reality".
But due to what just said: both games worth surely.
"Pentiment does not come close to this in terms of overall game quality" - Can you elaborate what you mean?
I finished Pentiment last week and loved it, the whole thing was so beautifully crafted and the writing was very enjoyable to me. Never thought the idea of having a font be part of a characterization.
Played half an hour of this but stopped since I wanted to get further into the books. So I'll come back to it in a bit.
I just started Pentiment, and I'm loving it. It's one of my favorite mystery/adventure games in years. I also revere Pillars of the Earth (game, books, miniseries). It's one of the best visual novels I've ever played.
But though they share the elements of a beautifully realized medieval world, and beautiful writing, they are not remotely the same time of game.
The only acceptable answer, of course, is play both!

Pentiment is not medieval, it's the renaissance.

No, not really. Personally I think that's the matter of preferance.
Pentiment is more psychological and philosophical with the smaller in scale story but it's nothing lesser about it. What's interesting, it doesn't give You clear answers to many things and it's challenging the player to seek their own truth. Your character is your average artsy Joe, who maybe could not change the big things and no matter what You do they will happen but You can influance lifes of characters that You meet and be a great change in their lifes. Also I really like how most of the characters are actually the good people who sometimes do the bad things. They have their own views, their own reasons to do things and the game is respectful enough to not pick fingers to who should be respected and who should be despised (maybe expect the miller) and leave it to the player. Which is great, challenging intelectually and mature, also game has this specific climate with it's music and stylized grafic but I guess to some more action oriented people all of that could be quite boring and it's also ok since as I already said it's the matter of preferance.
As for the Pillars of the Earth, it's the story with the bigger political and geographic scale, with more action and dramatic twists. There is not as much grey area as in the Pentiment. Yaeh there are some ambiguous choices and characters there but it's definetly more often when we know who shoud be cheered and who is the stone in the shoe. I would also say that when in the Pentiment the characters, the people and their views was most important and the plot was only the pretext to show it, it's the other way around in the Pillars where we jump from the character to character to whoever is more important to the plot at the moment which of course it's not the flaw but as I said it's the matter of preferance. But what is the flaw is that the Pillars are buggy and I would not count that it's going to improve someday.
So to sum it up I would say it's the matter of preferance. If you are more in to characters, philosophy and psychology I would say You'll prefer Pentiment, if you are more in to plot, political intrigue and action You'll prefer Pillars.
