There's not much I find more offputting than visual novels that sell themselves as not being like other visual novels - but regretfully, I do enjoy Class of 09 quite a lot

What I recommend doing is searching Yugicoin up on youtube - it's a 9 minute Yugioh parody made by the same person as this and shares a lot of the same humour. If you like that, you'll probably like this and if you don't, well you've probably saved yourself 10 bucks

Class Of 09 is an overly edgy and cynical look at mid 2000s teen culture, and that hits for me which might be why I have a soft spot for this. None of the characters are good people, it's kinda like It's Always Sunny with not as strong writing. The voice acting is also way way better than it has any right to be, which means the jokes are almost always delivered extremely well. It goes a long way in adding charm or a sick curiosity to the whole thing

Game for edgelords. The review is done after two hours of playtime of the first game and 5 minutes of the re-up to see if was the same bs. It is the same bs.

The game is marketed as a sarcastic, dark-american school comedy, but the constant suicide outcome is an ever present threat after every decision. You can kill yourself in the first 5 minutes of playtime. The first time I play it I got to the option to "go home and kill yourself" and I took that because, being a teenager once myself, I used that expression here and there. I came home, and hang myself. I say... ok this game don't f-around, sure. But then ending after ending I was lock to suicide constantly. To the point it was absurd. And I know that's a meta commentary, but its a bad one at that.

No where on the description of the game, the screenshots or the trailer there was a suicide content warning. I don't joke around with suicide, and the game just used as the bad ending for EVERY bad decision. It felt cheap and edgy for the sake of being edgy. I should be the target demographic for the game, but the writing and themes are so childish that it feels more like a twisted 5th grade parody.

The art is mediocre at best, the interface is meh, the amount of "path" reminds me more like a VN on rails. The voice acting is the saving grace, the actors really commit to the performance.

If you like it, you like it. But be aware that the screenshots, trailer and description are a poor descriptors to the actual content of the game.
