Am I expected to just kite the reaper until I've been in the game for an hour?

Another option
On 2nd disk you can have a special boss fight (there is achievement for loosing to the boos) that you can survive pretty easily for an hour if you have particular spell unlocked. I wanted to keep this tip as spoiler free as possible.

Thank you for the tip! I was wondering why the reaper shows up in some runs but not others. Time to farm some gold :D.

I think this rule applies to the first map, I definitely got destroyed by Reaper on latter maps before I destroyed all Lairs. But destroying all Lairs will still trigger Reaper.
