Or you can get this game for PlayStation 2 for comfortable playing.
Most plug n play controllers(the off brand ones you can buy) are by default set to the XInput protocal.
If you read your controllers' instruction manual, it should say how to change it.
For LOK Defiance, the alternative(older) protocal is DirectInput8, set to analog mode.
Most controllers support both, you just need to configure yours since it isnt done automatically. It dosent require any special software, usually just a set of controller commands to change it.
But seriously if you have the manual, its worth looking for it. Im not sure about Xbox/PS controllers, but off brand ones usually support both protocols.
I've been searching for years for a fix that I was comfortable with and this is the one I landed on. It's basic trial and error / re-mapping the controls to what the system ( game ) has within the controls section. It took me maybe 5 - 10 min to get the configuration that I was happy with, and everything works fine. The only minor pickadillo would be using the in game menu you still have to use keyboard and such , but a minor price to pay for a ( finally ) good playable fix.
i will gige it a try just now and install reWASD ... thanks for your help
Except you can just use the steam controller overlay and it plays perfectly fine.
How did you do that ? could not get this game to run on my steamdeck.
I had this game on the original xbox and was super excited to play again but couldn't get past the first screen on the SD
via steam > settings > in game, activate the overlay while playing
then, settings > controller > general settings, pick the controller config
now library tab > defiance proprieties > enable overlay while in game
reboot the steam client and try to play
edit: i forgot to add that I had to boot steam as admin to let the overlay work
