Steam for Linux

I can not play with my friend on Linux (AOE II)
Hello, from the official program of steam on Linux I can not play to AOEII (because it is said it is just for windows), by this one I appear as online and I can see my friend online too.
The only way to be able to play the AOEII is by steam opened by "Play On Linux", and I can play online and so on with random people. The problem is when I am by here, I appear as disconnected and my friend can not invite to me to play with him.
Also when we try to make the game to find it and join, we can not find us, they appear different games.
Can someone help me, please? Thank you

you should post it in game forums. it's not an issue with Linux but with game itself. You'll have better chance to get a reply from people who actively plays it and possibly aware of this issue.

Are you trying to run the "Definitive Edition" or the "HD Edition"?

Each of those two versions has a different reported status on ProtonDB:

The other thing I can think of is that the game may auto-select regional servers and Proton may be interfering with the selection... you and your friends could probably force it to use a specific server.

Hello I have the HD edition and he has the "definitive edition", so the only thing we can do is trying in regional? thanks
I'm not even sure the game has a way to choose servers, as I don't really play it... but looking for such a feature would be a good bet to try and make you and your friends see each other

One more thing that may help figure out which issue you're more likely facing... can you play online with random people and just not your friends? Or is online multiplayer completely broken for you?

If it's just your friends that you can't see online, than there is also a chance the issue is really in mismatched servers, so you need to look into forcing everyone to use the same server.

If you can't play online at all, maybe Proton is not providing some feature that steam needs to connect to servers... then you need to look into fixing an issue with Proton, as it does work with WINE+Windows-Steam.
could be M$ has different multiplayer code for HD and definitive versions? it connects only with people who play on same game version as yours?

wine (and Proton as face lifted wine) needs winbind for networking. winbind is not always installed on Linux distros and wine/proton does not have it as hard dependency so it won't be installed when you install wine or steam. try to install winbind and restart your PC. even if it won't help with this issue it can prevent other issues in multiplayer games

OP says he can play using his version if he runs it via PlayonLinux >> Wine >> Windows-Steam >> game, so we can already rule out different versions of the game not being able to play together.

I didn't know about winbind, but wouldn't the lack of it affect Wine inside PoL too?

it's a long shot, as I said it may not help. just in case steam's proton changed something for networking.
See and I stumbled upon this as I'm having an issue where I will connect with friends that are on Windows and I'm running on Linux We have the exact same version it's just after a good 20 minutes into the game The game disconnects for everyone and we've tried this a good five times but as soon as I'm on Windows and I connect with my friends everything's fine please help I've had this with other games that I've played on Linux and I'm not sure what's causing it.

it's a longshot, but look for threads about slow download speeds in steam, in this forum... at least oe of those mentions a fix involving a change in the MTU timing config in wifi settings, to match Steam's inexplicable undocumented intermittent needs (everything else on linux is fine, only steam needs this, so it's a steam thing, among many steam things)

hopefully this helps keep you and your friends connected without whatever connection error is causing everyone to get booted out

edit: this guy!
