There actually wasn't anything wrong with the STEAM Hardware,
By Valve, As A Matter Of Fact STEAM Link Box Is Way More Updated
Then The STEAM Link APP That We Have Now...

Way More Updated In Terms Of Features & Support For Many Things
Such As Types Of Controllers, & All That...

As A Matter Of Fact, I Can't See Why Anyone Would Switch From
Full Version To A BETA Version... When The BETA Version Is Bare Min, ~_~

As For The So Called LAG & Connectivity Issue In The Link BOX?
- To Be Fair, It Wasn't A Huge Upgrade From The APP & Barely Anything Even
Supports The STEAM App To Start With...

So To Me? STEAM Link BOX Still Has A Relatvely Useful Place In Peoples Homes Today...



Basically, All Of The Hardware Valve Has Released Lately Do Have

I think The Real Issue Here, Is Valve Just Got Lazy, & Didn't Care To Support

push the limits anymore... Sometimes you could just ride out what you

always find another way or better way to Innovate at some other time...

Look at PlayStation for example: Do we really need to change the PS3
Interface from PS3 to PS4 & PS5? The PS3 FAT Media Models Interface
to me is a lot more Lightweight, Complex, Innovative, Creative, & Nicer
looking all in 1 go...

You Could Technically keep the PS3 Interface, & since it's Lightweight,
it won't hinder the PS4 Or PS5 When Pushing The Graphix On Games,
Thus More Room For Performance Enhancements In Games, & You Can
Now Get Rid Of Your Load Times That You Want In Games, & also Get
8K Gaming Out The Door...

Electronics Are Just Way Too Heavy & Taxing On It's Self Today,
That You Can't Even Get Gaming To Run Well At All... 8K Gaming

That Doesn't Need That Much Power To Run It, Just Simply Because
Your Electronics Or Computers Aren't Put To Better Use...

While great for its purpose (I quite liked the concept and results), Steam Link hardware had no other habilities beyond acting as remote steam controller/display...

It had limited availability, limited encoding/decoding, limited connectivity, etc and was yet another device on the living room with no life of its own beyond this purpose.


Steam Link (hardware and software is not a replacement for SteamOS, as this is a linux-based OS that you would run on a computer to actually run Steam and the games directly, while whith Steam Link you'd just be streaming from a PC somewhere else to the TV (case in point, a PC running SteamOS is actually capable of streaming to Steam Link too).... in short: you could game with SteamOS while the PC is in use by someone else at home, but not with the Steam Link hardware.

SteamOS is actually a fairly ordinary linux distro, based on Debian, but with a custom session that was only Steam in fullscreen-mode, without a window compositor beneath it or other complex DE components.

It suffers from growing abandonment by Valve, but had its merits in the early days, when it acted as a de-facto testing ground for linux distro tweaks under Valve's control, which they could later propose for upstream distros/components.

Normal desktop linux distros are now very competent auto-running Steam in fullscreen on bootn if you set them up like that, and since SteamOS lagged behind in features and even updated components, it pretty much lost its purpose for regular users.


As for Steam Link software, Valve recently released it for Raspbian to run on the Raspberry Pi hardware lineup, and for x86 too. That means you can repurpose an old box out of the closet for free....

...or a US$ 35,00 machine that is fully capable as a Steam Link hardware replacement, with stronger connectivity, better encoding/decoding capacity and - very important - a device you could use for *many* other things besides Steam (eg: Kodi, Plex, RetroPie, NAS, PiHole, 24/7 Torrent/Download Box, Home Automation, ...) without added cost or space.

Keep in mind at some point Steam tried going into movie streaming and yet lacked any reasonable kind of media-center capabilities for local media, which on SteamOS and Steam Link hardware where a significant drawback... while with Steam Link software they let the user solve their own issue on the same device without lifting one extra finger. They also stopped having to worry about firmware updates for Steam Link hardware, while Raspbian is quite secure and has very well kept package updates handled by others.

They should change it to the openSUSE logo.

SUSE + Valve would be sooo great
