Steam for Linux

Steam for Linux

Constant "NO CONNECTION"
Brand new Ubuntu 24 build with Steam installed as a Flatpak.

Trying to install games or updates is a pain. Every few minutes, steam shows "NO CONNECTION" at the bottom of the window and refuses to download anything, despite being online (I'm able to browse community and store pages, etc.)

Can I just turn off whatever connectivity checks Steam is attempting at permanently?

Does the same happen in .Deb version? I had many problems with game updates and workshop items and the .deb version solved all this.

No, I use Flatpak because Steam can't be trusted to run unsandboxed.

No, I mean Flatpak.

com.valvesoftware.Steam - it's in the Flatpak repository.
flatpak and snap steam are problematic, the apt version is reliable.

I was about to say 'try the deb' myself until I saw your note on sandboxing. You're completely right on that part, it's not a trustworthy app in terms of stability or data.

I've caught it automatically sending crash reports sometimes, complete with all sorts of system info including user information and local desktop session cookie data. It's quite the garbage in so many ways.

Perhaps a workaround could be giving it unfettered network access on the flatpak level, and restricting its networking with OpenSnitch?

I think Steam just needs to do more testing of their Linux client. Is that asking too much?
the flatpak isn't an official steam package made by valve, it could be the flathub folks getting something wrong, the native repo/.deb works fine.

Note: This is a community package of Steam gaming plaform not officially supported by Valve. Report bugs through linked issue tracker.

what is "untrustworthy"?

flatpak steam sucks

have not had an issue with the repo using ubuntu, deb, or arch

is this the issue you are talking about in the other post?

Yes. I'm not sure what makes it "suck", but I'm willing to try the deb directly out if it helps.

It would be nice to figure out what exactly makes this issue happen first though.

it sucks because every time i have tried it, it has troubles of one kind or another

something that just does not happen with the .deb

not sure if ti is something to do with it being a third party that makes it

but that would be my guess and where i would start to find the problem

edit

i am still curious about the

I'm using Valve's .deb version, and it gives me the same connection trouble on both Mint 21.3 and BunsenLabs 12 (basically Debian 12).
