Steam for Linux

Steam for Linux

Where is the damn Proton compatdata directory of my game !
With the help of proton, I have now moved to Linux and can't be more happy.
Almost everything is working perfectly and, with a very few exception, i'm able to play with every games on my library. Proton is awesome.

However, I have a big problem to understand why it is so hard to find the proton directory (on compatdata) for my games: I want to backup/move my savegames, add mods manualy, acess to a config file... and there is now way to know what directory is used by each game !
I have to open each directory and guess who is who by checking on appdata, my documents, ...
And it's so much worse when you're using Proton for non steam game. As far as I know, there is absolutly no way to find it !

It looks so simple to give the id or the path to the directory in steam without having to find something on an url... Even better, a simple button on the game configuration (under the scrolling menu for choosing a specific proton version for exemple ?) to open the proton directory of the game ?!!

Why such opacity ?
Proton is an incredible solution but it has a better management on some third party apps like in Heroic Game launcher than in steam...

right click game icon>properties>updates>get app ID number, find same number in compatdata folder.

Right click on properties of the game in steam.
click on local files choose browse.
Go 2 directories up find the folder compdata. Check on https://www.protondb.com your game.
For example Frostpunk is https://www.protondb.com/app/323190 or check the discussion site for your game in steam you'll find the number there in the url as well.
Choose the folder with the number given as a subdirectory of compdata.
check subdirectories for game files.
For example "mnt/ssdlinux/steam/steamapps/compatdata/323190/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/"
check if there is your save game folder if you have not enabled cloud save.
Or simply use the option to save your data in the cloud save. can be enabled or disabled for every game,
Have fun ;O)

Thanks, nice workarounds ;)
It's fun to find that we all have differents methods to find what we need.
I'll keep the suggestion of @Xenophobe as it seems to be the simplest one.
And it doesn't solve the case for the non-steam games...

I have made another subject under the feature request sub: Easy way to find my compatdata folder

Another way:
Go to pc gaming wiki[www.pcgamingwiki.com] search for your game and read the linux file locations.

Non-steam games have a very high numerical value. However, once the app/game is launched, and if you have several, it is rathe 'difficult' and you'll have to check the contents.

i just use "protontricks" to search for the gameid and look into my steam games compatdata folder
