Steam for Linux

Steam will only connect if I'm using a VPN - Wtf?
Steam used to be working for me, up until today when it decided to cut it's connection to me for some reason - it just keeps trying to connect to the server. All amounts of resetting, reinstalling, restarting my computer don't help. It simply won't run and gives me the message "Fatal Error: Steam needs to be online to update" — and yes, I tried adding media.steamwhatever in my etc/hosts file and it still doesn't work. But the stupid part is that, once I turn on my VPN, Steam springs to life and downloads updates and connects like nothing ever happened. And I don't want to get banned for using a VPN, so I'm not really sure what else to do. I might call Bell tomorrow, maybe they are blocking it on their end? Really frustrating...

You should not need to edit the /etc/hosts file for Steam. Which Linux distro are you using?

Ubuntu 17.04. It was working well today, I'm not sure why is this happening.

For anyone with similar issues - - I was having "Internet/Network Issues" with 17.04 (very COMMON), and even occasionally with 16.04.1-2&3.

Until then I did not even know what"DNS Resolve" meant. Below is my 3 month old notes so they are likely outdated. In a nutshell I would Google: ...
Ubuntu DNS RESOLVE HOST PROLEMS NETWORK Slow Solved
and your unique stuff and I bet you will find an answer.

All these problems are gone iwth Ubuntu 17.10 (which is VERY Stable and solid using Gnome-Xorg Now)

Here are my notes
I had some UGLY networking issues with a new Ubuntu 17.04 install (been using Ubuntu variations for +10 years). It turned out to be something I have never heard of before, and was from the "new DNS host resolver in "systemd""?? • The below solution fixed the issue, and other related network slowness, and random pauses. • For other reasons I switched back to 16.04.3 LTR and all was fine in this regard from the get go. • Here is the website with a better and fuller explanation and Solution! ∘ Troujbleshooting Network Connection Problem ‣ https://www.hecticgeek.com/2017/04/ubuntu-17-04-systemd-dns-issues/ ∘ I realized that this issue was originating from a service called ‘systemd-resolved’. This is a DNS caching and validating service that comes pre-installed with Ubuntu 17.04. • service NetworkManager status • head /etc/resolv.conf • sudo nano /etc/resolv.conf ∘ change "nameserver 127.0.0.1" to nameserver 8.8.8.8 • sudo apt-get install unbound ∘ Step 3: Now let’s disable the troublesome ‘systemd-resolved’ • sudo systemctl disable systemd-resolved • sudo systemctl stop systemd-resolved • sudo nano /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf • Change to ‣ dns=unbound • sudo systemctl enable unbound-resolvconf • service NetworkManager status ∘ reboot

Always Trying to help, Mark:steamhappy:
And I hope this does!! It was infuriating!!:steamfacepalm:

I was just trying to help, and I kinda made it clear that I am fairly ignorant of this kind of problem/solution. Having said that, when I was having issues as I stated above, all roads led to

DNS Resolve Host Problems and systemd-resolved issues, in Ubuntu 17.04, which was "Greek" to me at the time.

My symptoms were:
Slow Internet, Dropped Connections, Apps not working (TeamViewer especially), Steam "Not Connecting", Steam "Not Updating" ...

That is why I said that these "Notes" are likely outdated and just for reference

Just Trying To Help, Mark

That worked for the OP because they were getting this error:

"error: Couldn't resolve host name"

I don't see that in your output. So you seem to have a different problem. Possibly due to this:

"opensslconnection.cpp (♥♥♥♥) : Assertion Failed: unable to load trusted SSL root certificates"

Make sure your system is fully up to date and try (re)installing the ca-certificates package. How did you install Steam in the first place?

Thats the line I missed due to the lack of Ubuntu/Linux knowledge!

Thank you Maleko!

Solution:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall ca-certificates

Source: https://askubuntu.com/questions/420860/problem-with-certificates

I will post it in new thread too.
