Only the other day I cringed at XCOM's poor excuse for a manual. It's nice to see people taking the time to properly explain game mechanics without trying to push people into buying strategy guides :)
I've been on the fence with this game so far. I enjoy games like HOMM and Disciples, but have tried other games like Civ 5 and the Total War series and haven't got to grips with them. Some people report that this game is a kind of hybrid of the two. I for one, like manuals if they are brief, as I prefer a short tutorial and then learn as I go along. The sale price today is tempting me. As a relative newcomer, is this game easy to get into? Or is it a minefield of stats and steep curves

There was a notice on their forums today that they were doing maintenance on forums and website, and to not be surprised if everything wasn't running quite right during that period.
