I'd like to start this review by saying that this game is fun for the most part however its issues, of which there are many, are too big to ignore. The game's combat is simple yet, fun. But it can be a real pain in the ass when you're being juggled, not given proper visual queues, or having the camera clip into the wall. When the camera isn't in the wall then it's right next to Hellboy at all times making him take up 50% of the screen.

Now I don't play that many roguelikes but this one is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ slow it's unreal. Hellboy's run speed is 15% faster than his walking speed, interacting with the environment requires 3 - 4 seconds of standing around for no reason with an additional slowing down of the sensitivity once done too. Think the upgrades are gonna help you? Fat chance, you've got to grind to get the currency needed to buy the upgrades outside of runs. Each run so far seems to give you like 90 to 100 or so orbs, but most upgrades cost more than that. Why do I have to spend so much time grinding for these incredibly simple upgrades?

It's also beyond repetitive. After like 3 hours or so, you've seen what most of this games tricks are. But worse of all, the runs have you sink so much time into them that when you die you just don't want to even play anymore, which is the exact opposite feeling I should be getting with this type of game. I haven't beat the game, but I believe I'm on the homestretch at the time of this review and I lost my run mind way through and I had to restart. That took roughly and hour to get to that point maybe a little longer.

Like I said I do like this game it has potential but I don't think the devs are gonna fix any of the issues, since some are just baked so deep into how the game works. But I can't recommend this game. Overall, too slow/sluggish, grindy as all hell, and I don't feel like much as changed from hour 1 to hour 10.

I'm only a bit into it, but the art and voices are excellent. Especially the choice of Lance Reddick as Hellboy. Cannot recommend this more. Play it with a joypad that has rumble for most fun!

After a fun run, I have to say that it's a tease at first. The combat feels easy, like it's going to be a smooth ride. But, it gets cranked up later. Very satisfying combat. Totally worth the grind, and YES, there IS a story. If you have any affection for BPRD and Helboy, you must play this game.
Seriously, when you walk into a boss fight, loaded with "toughness", and your first move is a headbutt? So effing good.
