I haven't touched it in ages, but I can believe this. I bet some indals of the Steam Workshop code relied on GameMaker: Studio online support to work.

For what it's worth, Gamemaker, under the name of just 'GameMaker', is back up on Steam. Unfortunately they didn't resurrect this one, but at least that one likely has support... for now.
