The story, characters, tone, setting and combat in Daybreak are all quite different from CS, but the structure is quite similar to the 1st and 3rd CS games.
Personally, I preferred this to all 4 Cold Steel games, but it depends on what you're looking for. Did you play Sky or Crossbell? Was there anything you liked or didn't like about those?
If you played CS till the end but dislike it, it's basically like the previous games :
start in HQ, go do some missions for X and Y, travel to Z city, do some missions and unveil the plot, kick the bad ppl, come back to HQ, rince and repeat.
However, if you didn't like CS and skipped it, just go play something else at this rate.
It's kind of stupid to keep playing the serie if you skip some major plot, since in Daybreak 2 and 3, we have returning characters from cold steel and reverie.
Edit : saw your profile, you didn't play CS3-4 and Reverie.
Daybreak is set some time after Reverie with the plots of it and CS in mind (and all previous games ofc). What happen in these games is important.
They even talk about the conclusion of these games in the story, and some plots happening in Daybreak are directly linked to what happen in Reverie / straight up taken from it. (singularity for example)
Like i said previously, you will play in the next games characters that appears only in Reverie or returning characters from CS1-4.
If you go play Daybreak and like it, you will need to play in a near future to CS3-4-Reverie before doing Daybreak 2-3 or you will be seriously lost with plot and ppl
