Has a bit of a learning curve to fully master and requires a lot of effort to fully complete with all A ranks, but that's part of what makes this game so special for many players.
The mech levels are all about chaining together combos as much as possible. Up to 2,000 points can be scored from an 11 enemy chain, but holding your lock-on for too long will result in the chain being broken with no shots fired.
Treasure hunting levels are mostly about time. So long as you can clear the stage as fast as possible, you can get an A rank form the time bonuses alone. Use the radar, learn the map and try to limit yourself to one hint per emerald if possible.
Speed levels require taking advantage of special shortcuts and trick ramps for score bonuses. In Metal Harbour, for example, there's a higher handle that's harder to reach but results in 1,500 bonus points which is essential for the A rank if you can grab onto it in time.
You also cannot die once during the level - this resets your score to 0 so you need a perfect run of the level to get good ranks.
