Do I need patch dark_messiah_1.02_us_uk_fr_it_sp for this game or is it allready a part of the steam version?

I want to try this game, it looks great. But I downloaded the demo and when I press play it just hangs, no splash screen or anything. My PC runs everything so I'm not sure what it is?

I missed out on this when it came out but it looks worth checking out. Is it too dated to play or still playable, maybe with mods?
